Cowen says EA's new 'Battlefield' game 'headed for a rough go'

Shares of Electronic Arts (EA) were marginally lower after a Cowen analyst said that the company's upcoming war shooter "Battlefield V" appears "headed for a rough go." ORDOMETER ANALYSIS: In a research note to investors, Cowen analyst Doug Creutz unveiled Cowen's updated Ordometer analysis, which historically used Amazon's (AMZN) best-seller data but transitioned this year to using GameStop's (GME) best-seller data. According to updated data, Activision Blizzard's (ATVI) "Call of Duty: Black Ops 4" is at the top of the 2018 Ordometer rankings, as Creutz thinks pre-orders are tracking broadly in-line with other strong-selling "Call of Duty" games. The analyst noted that Take-Two's (TTWO) much-anticipated "Red Dead Redemption 2" is the third ranked game on the Odometer's rankings, with Bethesda's "Fallout 76" just ahead in second. "RDR 2" is currently tracking 46% below "Black Ops 4," according to Creutz. In addition, the analyst said that Ubisoft's (UBSFY) upcoming action role-playing game "Assassin's Creed Odyssey" is tracking roughly in line with the median of prior titles in the "Assassin's Creed" franchise, though he noted that most prior "Assassin's Creed" games were available for sale before E3, whereas "Odyssey" was first made available the week of E3, so his firm's data is capturing the initial pre-order surge. NEW BF GAME 'TRACKING WEAKLY': Meanwhile, Creutz backed a Market Perform rating on EA, saying that the newest "Battlefield" title is tracking "very weakly" -- over 85% behind "Black Ops 4." Creutz noted that this estimate is "very far off" the tracking levels of previous "Battlefield" games in 2011, 2013, and 2016. The analyst added that because "Battlefield V" has a release date directly in between the new "Call of Duty" and "Red Dead Redemption 2," he worries that EA's new shooter game could be headed for a similar fate as the 2016 EA game "Titanfall 2," which got squeezed out of its launch date directly between "Battlefield 1" and "Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare." Creutz noted that this year marks the first time "Battlefield" has gone head-to-head with the "Black Ops" sub-brand. PRICE ACTION: In afternoon trading, shares of EA are down about 0.5% to $127.41. Meanwhile, Activision Blizzard and Take-Two are both also trading lower.

Early review scores of EA's Madden modestly above last year, says Piper Jaffray
Piper Jaffray analyst Michael Olson noted that the current average "metacritic" review score for Electronic Arts' Madden '19 is 83.5, which is above the 82 rating for last year's version of the game and higher than the 10-year average of 82 for the series. He remains comfortable with his forecast for flat year-over-year unit sales of 5.5M for Madden, but believes the uptick in average review score might offer modest upside. Olson keeps an Overweight rating and $165 price target on EA shares.

On The Fly: Top five analyst upgrades
Catch up on today's top five analyst upgrades with this list compiled by The Fly: 1. AutoZone (AZO) upgraded to Buy from Hold at Deutsche Bank with analyst Mike Baker saying Improving comps and fundamentals, coupled with a stock that has underperformed year-to-date, has brought a "compelling" valuation. 2. Pandora (P) upgraded to Outperform from Sector Perform at RBC Capital with analyst Mark Mahaney saying the company's double-digit organic revenue growth and declining EBITDA losses were driven by improving execution, adding that while the 2% active listener hours decline is a worry, the valuation on the stock is "undemanding" given its expected annualized revenue growth of about 10% over the next 3 years. 3. Papa John's (PZZA) upgraded to Buy from Hold at Jefferies with analyst Alexander Slagle saying the stock, down 50% from highs, now reflects the likelihood that fundamentals will get worse before improving. 4. Electronic Arts (EA) upgraded to Buy from Hold at Argus with analyst Joseph Bonner saying the latest pullback in the stock price after the company's recent Q1 earnings report offers a favorable entry point. 5. Sarepta (SRPT) upgraded to Overweight from Equal Weight at Morgan Stanley with analyst Matthew Harrison saying the stock is down about 34% since June 19 after having moved up by about 50% when its initial DMD gene therapy data was announced. Piper Jaffray says Call of Duty, RDR2 'most anticipated' games pre-holiday
Piper Jaffray analyst Michael Olson says that a survey of more than 300 gamers suggests Activision Blizzard's (ATVI) Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 and Take Two's (TTWO) Red Dead Redemption 2 are most anticipated games for pre-holiday 2018, and tells investors in a research note that an analysis of YouTube trailer likes-to-dislikes shows that RDR2 is, by far, the most "liked" of upcoming titles. While Olson is Overweight on all three, he ranks them as follows for remainder of 201 based on most potential for upside through the second half of calendar 2018: 1) Take Two, 2) Activision Blizzard, 3) Electronic Arts (EA).

Ulta Beauty Q2 may outperform based on competitor trends, says Loop Capital
Loop Capital analyst Anthony Chukumba is keeping his Hold rating and $250 price target on Ulta Beauty (ULTA) ahead of its Q2 earnings next week, but notes that there may be some upside to his expectations based on the positive recent competitor commentary. The analyst expects investors to focus on the comparable and mass cosmetics sales growth, along with the company's operating margins and future earnings guidance, particularly in light of the slowing sequential comps growth trends over the past 6 quarters and concerns about the Amazon (AMZN) inroads in the prestige cosmetics market.

Walmart price target raised to $112 from $100 at Argus
Argus analyst Chris Graja raised his price target on Walmart (WMT) to $112, citing the company's decade-best Q2 comps growth and a positive update on its e-commerce business, which grew by 40% in Q1. Graja also notes that online grocery sales were strong, as the department delivered its best comps growth in 9 years to retain its competitive position against Amazon's (AMZN) Whole Foods unit. The analyst keeps his Buy rating on Walmart and contends that the company is immune to the primary risk of "irrelevance" for retailers, stating that it plays an "important" role in the economy with its buying power and "logistical prowess".

Fly Intel: Today's top analyst calls on Wall Street
Check out today's top analyst calls from around Wall Street, compiled by The Fly. GOLDMAN SACHS CUTS ALNYLAM TO BUY: Goldman Sachs analyst Terence Flynn downgraded Alnylam (ALNY) to Buy from Conviction Buy. The analyst also lowered his price target for the shares to $155 from $193. Flynn said the lack of cardio data in the approved U.S. label for Onpattro is disappointing and could represent a disadvantage versus Pfizer's (PFE) competitor drug Tafamadis. Piper Jaffray analyst Edward Tenthoff recommended buying shares of Alnylam Pharmaceuticals on weakness following the approval of Onpattro. Morgan Stanley analyst David Lebowitz lowered his price target to $93, Nomura Instinet analyst Christopher Marai lowered his price target to $73, and Stifel analyst Paul Matteis maintained a Buy rating but cut his price target to $123 from $125 and slightly lowered his revenue ramp for the drug based on modestly reduced share in mixed-phenotype haTTR patients and lower share in cardiac-only haTTR patients. B. Riley FBR analyst Madhu Kumar raised his price target to $230. RUBIUS THERAPEUTICS INITIATED AT MULTIPLE FIRMS: Rubius Therapeutics (RUBY) was initiated with an Outperform at Leerink, an Overweight at JPMorgan and Morgan Stanley, as well as a Buy at Jefferies. PIPER JAFFRAY SAYS AMAZON AD BUSINESS GROWING INTO PROFIT DRIVER: Amazon's (AMZN) advertising business "has been quietly growing into a massive driver of current and future profitability," Piper Jaffray analyst Michael Olson told investors in a research note. Applying an advertising comp multiple of 16 times to estimated 2020 Amazon advertising operating income suggests an ad business that should be valued at $150B-$190B, Olson contended. IMPERIAL CAPITAL CUTS NETFLIX PRICE TARGET TO $494: Imperial Capital analyst David Miller lowered his price target for Netflix (NFLX) to $494 after he slightly reduced his global subscriber estimates. The analyst said that in the "interest of being conservative," he decreased his fiscal 2018 global subscriber estimate to 141.2M from 141.4M and fiscal 2019 global subscriber estimate to 164.4M from 166.3M. DISH DOWNGRADED TO SELL AT MOFFETTNATHANSON: MoffettNathanson analyst Craig Moffett downgraded Dish (DISH) to Sell from Neutral with a price target of $29 and noted that while the reported Q2 business conditions in the core satellite TV business were "genuinely better" amid reduced churn and slower subscriber losses, the Spectrum segment -- which holds "all" of the company's equity value -- is worse.

Fly Intel: Today's top analyst calls on Wall Street
Check out today's top analyst calls from around Wall Street, compiled by The Fly. GAMESTOP STARTED WITH A BUY: Jefferies analyst Stephanie Wissink started GameStop (GME) with a Buy rating and $18 price target. Her contrarian view on the stock is that under potential new leadership with a well defined vision and execution plan, the stock's valuation, which she feels is "overlooked and overly discounted," could improve. GameStop is higher by 2.5% in midday trading. PIPER SEES CISCO LOSING SECURITY SHARE TO PALO ALTO: Piper Jaffray analyst James Fish says his firm's recent channel survey work across networking and security were weaker than he's seen in past calendar quarters for Cisco Systems (CSCO). Cisco's Security survey results were "especially weak," implying Palo Alto Networks (PANW) is taking market share, the analyst said, although the former remains his top networking pick. He kept an Overweight rating on Cisco shares, which were down almost 1% in midday trading. JEFFERIES DOWNGRADES P&G: Jefferies analyst Kevin Grundy downgraded Procter & Gamble (PG) to Hold from Buy and lowered his price target for the shares to $79 from $83. Slowing market growth, volatility in emerging markets, U.S. retail difficulties, the stronger U.S. dollar and "pricing challenges" should drive estimates lower, Grundy told investors in a research note titled "Tide Unlikely to Turn: Downgrade to Hold as Bull Thesis Wanes." Grundy said he preferred shares of Church & Dwight (CHD) and Energizer (ENR) for exposure to the Home and Personal Care space. TRADE DESK STARTED WITH A SELL: Pivotal Research analyst Brian Wieser initiated Trade Desk (TTD) with a Sell rating and $58 price target, stating that he believes the company can grow rapidly this year but should then see its growth decelerate. He believes its growth will plateau at a size smaller than Criteo's (CRTO), on which Wieser also initiated coverage this morning with a Buy rating. WELLS FARGO DOWNGRADES TWO THEME PARKS: Wells Fargo analyst Timothy Conder downgraded both SeaWorld (SEAS) and Six Flags (SIX) to Market Perform from Outperform, citing valuation, negative seasonal trading patterns, and weather impact, despite ongoing favorable consumer fundamentals and the key Q3 just starting. SeaWorld is trading down 1.3%, while Six Flags is down 1.7% at midday.

Activision Blizzard pullback offers favorable entry point, says Argus
Argus analyst Joseph Bonner kept his Buy rating and $81 price target on Activision Blizzard, saying the recent pullback in the stock price related to the success of competitor's "Fortnite" shooting game offers a favorable entry point for investors. Bonner states that the management has acknowledged some "near-term" market share impact, but also believes that "Fortnite" success has attracted new entrants to the shooter format of videogaming. The analyst also expects Activision to see some benefits in its latest installment of "Call of Duty" and also begin to feature the popular "battle royale" format in its upcoming titles.

China approval freeze creates buying opportunity in Activision, says Jefferies
Jefferies analyst Timothy O'Shea said he views China having frozen mobile game approvals as a temporary problem and "mostly a non-issue" as only the monetization approval process has been frozen, not the content approval process, and he note administrators are already implementing a fast-track approval process to alleviate the problem. Activision Blizzard's (ATVI) upcoming Call of Duty mobile game was expected to launch in China this year, but O'Shea said this is a smaller game that is not in his estimates, adding that Tencent (TCEHY) gets 70% of the revenue under its deal for the game. Activision has a pipeline of new mobile games coming that he would still expect to launch in China over time and O'Shea sees the 15% pullback in the game maker's shares in the last month as a buying opportunity, he tells investors. He maintains a Buy rating and $90 price target on Activision Blizzard shares.

Fly Intel: Today's top analyst calls on Wall Street
Check out today's top analyst calls from around Wall Street, compiled by The Fly. ARGUS SAYS BUY LULULEMON: Argus analyst John Staszak upgraded Lululemon (LULU) to Buy from Hold with a price target of $150, citing the company's Q1 earnings beat and expectations of improved comps in Q2, along with its "substantial" growth opportunities to expand its brand overseas and particularly in China. Staszak contends that Lululemon's growth prospects are "among the best in the apparel sector," with a transition to higher margin e-commerce sales seen expanding its operating margins in the coming several years. The analyst further notes that his implied price target valuation multiple of 44-times forward earnings is within the multiple range of companies like Nike (NKE), Under Armour (UA), and VF Corp. (VFC) and justified by its rapid e-commerce adoption and strong overall growth. KIMBERLY-CLARK RAISED AFTER PRICE HIKES: JPMorgan analyst Andrea Teixeira upgraded shares of Kimberly-Clark (KMB) to Neutral from Underweight and raised her price target to $114 from $90 following yesterday's announcement that the company will increase prices or reduce package counts on key products in North America. The analyst notes that while it remains to be seen if the price increases will "actually hold" given the intensely competitive U.S. market, she believes investors will give Kimberly-Clark shares the benefit of the doubt. Additionally, she tells investors that Procter & Gamble's (PG) commentary that it plans to raise prices on some of its premium paper products and diapers is "supportive" of Kimberly-Clark's ability to pass on higher prices. COTY CUT TWO NOTCHES AT MERRILL: BofA Merrill Lynch analyst Olivia Tong double downgraded Coty to Underperform from Buy and cut its price target to $10 from $16. Tong said Coty is now more exposed to the mass beauty market following its merger with 41 brands from PG Beauty and is seeing disruption from smaller, niche brands and newer distribution channels. ACTIVISION PULLBACK SEEN AS OPPORTUNITY: Jefferies analyst Timothy O'Shea said he views China having frozen mobile game approvals as a temporary problem and "mostly a non-issue" as only the monetization approval process has been frozen, not the content approval process, and he notes administrators are already implementing a fast-track approval process to alleviate the problem. Activision Blizzard (ATVI) has a pipeline of new mobile games coming that he would still expect to launch in China over time and O'Shea sees the 15% pullback in the game maker's shares in the last month as a buying opportunity, he tells investors.
