Gaming stocks get a jolt after Nvidia introduces 'turbocharged' laptop GPUs

Shares of companies in the gaming space are active on Tuesday GPU maker Nvidia (NVDA) introduced the GeForce GTX 1660 Ti and 1650 Turing-based GPUs for gaming laptops. WHAT'S NEW: Nvidia claims that the new GPU delivers a "major jump in overall performance and power efficiency for today's most popular games." "GeForce GTX 16-series gaming laptops take advantage of all of the shader innovations in the 12th generation NVIDIA Turing GPU architecture, including concurrent floating point and integer operations, unified cache architecture with 3x the L1 cache compared to the Pascal generation, and turbocharged performance using adaptive shading technology," the company said in a statement. WHAT'S NOTABLE: Nvidia's new cards will also enable content creators using Adobe (ADBE) Creative Cloud to access advanced video effects in Adobe Premiere Pro CC and Adobe Premiere Rush, and can "pan and zoom smoothly in Adobe Illustrator CC regardless of display resolution," Nvidia said. PRICE ACTION: Shares of Nvidia are up 1.6% to $191.50 while its chip-maker competitor AMD (AMD) is falling almost 1% to $27.95. GAMING AND HARDWARE: Shares of most companies in the PC gaming space are higher including Microsoft (MSFT), Dell Technologies (DELL), GameStop (GME), Electronic Arts (EA), Activision Blizzard (ATVI), Sony (SNE), Apple (AAPL) and Take-Two (TTWO).

Tesla price target lowered to $160 from $170 at Cowen
Cowen analyst Jeffrey Osborne maintained an Underperform rating on Tesla (TSLA) and lowered his price target to $160 from $170 following the company's "Autonomy Day" event, saying he sees a significant amount of technology and execution risk in the shift in strategy from competing in just electrification to also beating Nvidia (NVDA) in hardware, Google (GOOGL) in software, and building a better ride-hailing service than current leaders in the sector.

Piper sees U.S. ride-hailing market reaching $500B per year by 2040
Piper Jaffray expects the U.S. ride-hailing market will achieve annual revenue of $500B per year by 2040, analysts led by Alexander Potter tell investors in a research note. The firm, which utilized baseline data from the National Household Travel Survey, expects ride-hailing growth to continue, with around one-third of urban trips relying on shared third-party vehicles in 2040. This compares to a baseline of only 1.4% in 2017, and equates to a 20-year annual growth rate of ~14%, the analysts contend. Of the stocks with exposure to this trend, Piper prefers Lyft (LYFT), General Motors (GM) and NXP Semiconductors (NXPI). Other covered companies also warrant mention, including Apple (AAPL), Amazon.com (AMZN), Aptiv (APTV), Ford (F), Nvidia (NVDA), and Tesla (TSLA), says Piper.

Nomura cautious on Semiconductors near term, calls AMD 'stand out'
Nomura Instinet analyst David Wong rolled out coverage on four names in the U.S. Semiconductors. The analyst has a positive view on long-term semiconductor growth, but cyclical concerns make him cautious in the near term. He models long-term semiconductor annual sales growth of 7%-9% from 2020 to 2025, driven by new technologies, including artificial intelligence, autonomous driving, 5G communications, Internet of Things, and the continued buildout of global datacenter infrastructure. However, the cyclical downturn, which began in the second half of 2018, could "present headwinds" for chip companies through 2019 and possibly in 2020, Wong tells investors in a research note. He foresees continuing year-over-year declines for the chip industry through 2019, with 2019 down about 10%. Nonetheless, the analyst initiated coverage of AMD (AMD) and Intel (INTC) with Buy ratings and price targets of $33 and $65, respectively. AMD's "solid positions" in both the x86 microprocessor and standalone graphics processor markets "make it stand out," says Wong. He believes the company has an opportunity to gain share with the launch of its new microprocessor and GPU families, driving sales growth through 2019, 2020, and beyond. Further, Wong thinks Intel's "dominance" in microprocessors, and in particular its leadership in artificial intelligence and autonomous driving, will drive above-average long-term growth for the company. The analyst also initiated Nvidia (NVDA) and Xilinx (XLNX) with Neutral ratings. He thinks both stocks' valuations already reflect the companies' positives.

Wells Fargo downgrades Intel to Market Perform after 19% year-to-date rally
Wells Fargo analyst Aaron Rakers downgraded Intel (INTC) to Market Perform from Outperform while raising his price target for the shares to $60 from $55. The stock closed yesterday up 44c to $55.92. The shares, after rallying 19% year-to-date, reflect a more balanced risk/reward, Rakers tells investors in a research note. His downgrade is valuation-driven but also reflects a more cautious view on current semiconductor demand data points going into Q1 earnings. Further, Intel's comps thru 2019 are tough, and investor sentiment could become "more tempered" amid increasing visibility into AMD (AMD) share gain momentum, contends Rakers.

O365 subscription ARR could top $20B for the first time, while Azure could top $12B, he contends, adding that robust commercial cloud growth of 43% could push the cloud mix to 33% versus 5% in FY15. Ives believes the shift to cloud is a major secular trend and key tailwind that is significantly benefiting Microsoft in the field and should continue its momentum heading into the second half of 2019/2020 based on his checks showing an inflection point of demand is abound. He reiterates an Outperform rating on the shares.

Morgan Stanley prefers Seagate over Western Digital as cloud capex recovery play
Morgan Stanley analyst Katy Huberty said her industry conversations have increased her confidence in a cloud recovery in the second half. Her checks suggest orders from Microsoft (MSFT) will restart in Q2 and rise to above trend levels in Q3 while orders from Amazon (AMZN), Google (GOOGL), Facebook (FB) and Apple (AAPL) are expected to return in Q3. Given this context, Huberty said she prefers Seagate (STX) over Western Digital (WDC) as a play on a cloud capital expenditure recovery, noting that inventory levels position hard disk drives to benefit before NAND, that HDD pricing is structurally better positioned than NAND and her view that Seagate has a better HDD product portfolio to meet cloud demand in the second half of 2019 and first half of 2020. GameStop outlooks 'warrant ongoing caution,' says Baird
GameStop reported Q4 results below expectations, driven by weakness in pre-owned revenue and margins consistent with the holiday sales report, Baird analyst Colin Sebastian tells investors in a research note titled "Turnaround Plan Still Under Wraps; Lowering Estimates." Sony 'PS5' details largely in line with expectations, says Baird
After Sony (SNE) shared details around its upcoming next-generation game console, widely referred to as the "PlayStation 5," Baird analyst Colin Sebastian said the details - including plans for significant GPU and CPU upgrades and the inclusion of a solid state hard drive - are largely in line with his expectations and support his view that the next generation of consoles should be "a major catalyst" for software sales in 2020-2021 and beyond. Sony's announcement that the next-gen console will include a physical disc drive is a potential positive for GameStop's (GME) used and pre-owned console software segments, added Sebastian. March NPD video game sales dropped 17% year-over-year, says Piper Jaffray
March NPD video game sales were down 17% year-over-year, and down 8% for the full March quarter, despite a strong lineup of titles, Piper Jaffray analyst Michael Olson tells investors in a research note. Top titles for all of Q1 included Kingdom Hearts III from Square Enix and Nintendo titles Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe, adds the analyst. Despite the industry decline, Olson believes the data is most positive for Activision Blizzard (ATVI), with incremental title Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. The data is less positive for Electronic Arts (EA) and Take-Two, says Olson. However, he points out that the EA data does not include free to play title Apex Legends and Take-Two data does not include GTA Online. Activision, Zynga Q1 mobile revenue have upside potential, says Piper Jaffray
Piper Jaffray analyst Michael Olson says his firm's Q1 "mobile meter" analysis of iOS app rankings suggests Q1 mobile revenue for Activision Blizzard (ATVI) and Zynga (ZNGA) has upside potential, with Glu Mobile (GLUU) likely in-line and Electronic Arts (EA) tracking slightly below. For Activision and Zynga, titles in the top 100 and average rank both improved quarter, Olson tells investors in a research note. For Activision, the analyst is modeling a 1% quarter-over-quarter decline in King revenue, while for Zynga, he's modeling a 26% increase in mobile. Glu Mobile rankings worsened quarter-over-quarter, as expected, due to seasonal decline in Tap Sports Baseball, says the analyst. However, he notes this appears in-line with his estimate for down 7% quarter-over-quarter in-app transaction revenue. EA mobile data was down quarter-over-quarter, Olson notes, but he estimates a 2% increase in mobile revenue, "so this is slightly below plan." Bonner adds that Adobe's forward enterprise value to EBITDA multiple of 24 is currently 25% below the peer average.
