Oppenheimer analyst Noah Kaye initiated Twin Disc with an Outperform rating and $20 price target. In a research note to investors, Kaye says the company has carved out strong positions in marine propulsion, fracking and other industrial applications that leverage its core competencies in power transmission. While the analyst sees decelerating growth in key end-markets and recognizes the challenging current market environment for the shares, Kaye says this is reflected in a depressed EV/S multiple, which he believes should be structurally higher given Twin Disc's improving stability and earnings power.

Barrington encouraged after Snap-On's better than expected Q1
Barrington analyst Gary Prestopino says Snap-On's better than expected Q1 results were driven by a mid-single-digit sales increase in the U.S. van channel as well as new product introductions across all three business segments. Snap-on continues to have a favorable outlook due to the aging of the car parc as well as technological complexity of newer vehicles on the road coupled with its solid brand franchise in the market, Prestopino tells investors in a post-earnings research note. The analyst is encouraged that the company's organic growth is slowly increasing, especially in the Tools Group. He keeps an Outperform rating on the shares with a $180-$190 price target.

As previously reported, BMO Capital analyst R. Scott Graham downgraded A.O. Smith to Market Perform from Outperform and lowered his price target to $53 from $66. The analyst cites the weakness in the company's Q4 China results and expectations of a "difficult" Q1, with China water heater market still declining. Graham also believes that A.O. Morgan Stanley sees most, if not all, auto suppliers guiding below consensus
Ahead of the Detroit auto show, Morgan Stanley analyst Armintas Sinkevicius said he expects that most, if not all, auto suppliers will provide 2019 guidance that is lower than consensus. He sees the most downside risk to Visteon (VC) and Adient (ADNT), estimating that they may guide adjusted EBITDA 6.4% and 5.0% below consensus, respectively. Not everyone will provide guidance at the show, as American Axle (AXL) and Delphi Technologies (DLPH) gave guidance with Q3 earnings and Aptiv (APTV) and BorgWarner (BWA) plan to wait for Q4 earnings, added Sinkevicius. He estimates that, on average, the auto suppliers will guide to 1.5% revenue growth and -25 bps of margin contraction in 2019, adding that his concern is that the guidance provided at Detroit may not sufficiently de-risk figures. Others in the space include Lear (LEA), Tenneco (TEN) and Magna (MGA).

BorgWarner, Gentherm, Visteon, Autolive price targets raised at BMO Capital

The analyst attributes the snap-back rally in the sector stocks' prices to increased optimism over the impact of lingering trade issues and outlooks from companies that have so far updated on their Q4 performance, all of which suggested that the 2018-end declines were overextended. Carlson is raising his price target on Autoliv (ALV) to $84 from $79, on Gentex (GNTX) to $27 from $24, on Aptiv (APTV) to $84 from $74, on Veoneer (VNE) to $41 from $36, on BorgWarner (BWA) to $49 from $44, and on Visteon (VC) to $91 from $84.

Although he remains positively biased on core fundamentals, he sees limited upside. Wittmann lowered his price target to $44 from $48 on Mobile Mini shares.

Amazon freight launch an overhang on domestic U.S. brokers, says Baird
Baird analyst Benjamin Hartford noted that incumbent U.S. truck brokers such as C.H. Robinson (CHRW) and Landstar System (LSTR) underperformed U.S. asset-based transports yesterday after it came to light that Amazon (AMZN) launched its website, freight.amazon.com, related to its truck brokerage service. He views this reaction to be the correct read by the market, as he sees asset-based carriers with emerging logistics capabilities - like Knight-Swift (KNX), Schneider National (SNDR), J.B. Hunt (JBHT) and Werner (WERN) - being strategically better positioned to weather the risk of gross margin compression from full truckload services being offered by Amazon, Hartford tells investors. Hartford has Neutral ratings on both C.H. Robinson and Landstar.

Air Transport Services named a Best Idea at Stephens
Stephens analyst named Air Transport Services (ATSG) as his Best Idea, replacing Landstar System (LSTR), stating that he remains convicted that the stock is poised to move higher as the company executes in 2019 and investors gain confidence on additional growth in 2020. He does not believe that positive fundamental factors, such as elevated customer demand, strong cash flow generation and visibility into stable earnings, are properly reflected in the current valuation and he maintains an Overweight rating and $32 price target on Air Transport Services shares.

Stephens released its Best Ideas list for 2019, noting that over the last 13 years its Best Ideas list has outperformed the Russell 2000 by an average of 300 bps. Of note, six of the firm's 30 analysts listed "cash" as their best idea for this year. Among the rest, the picks included: Landstar System (LSTR), Enova (ENVA), RealPage (RP), FMC Corporation (FMC), Avanos (AVNS), Knight-Swift (KNX), CBS (CBS), Vulcan Materials (VMC), Encompass Health (EHC), Watsco (WSO), Global Payments (GPN), O'Reilly Automotive (ORLY), NeoGenomics (NEO), Continental Resources (CLR), Union Pacific (UNP), Ametek (AME), Wintrust Financial (WTFC), Helmerich & Payne (HP), Penske Automotive (PAG), Signature Bank (SBNY), Noble Energy (NBL), Origin Bancorp (OBNK), GrubHub (GRUB) and CenterState Bank (CSFL).

Landstar System initiated with a Hold at SunTrust
As reported yesterday, SunTrust analyst Stephanie Benjamin initiated Landstar System with a Hold rating and a $105 price target. The analyst sees "limited catalysts" for the company to outperform its TL grade peers since Landstar "operates predominately in the spot market" where freight rates are set to moderate in 2019. Benjamin also notes that her implied target assumes a 15-times forward earnings multiple, which is the low end of the 15- to 22-times multiple range on the stock.

Woodward price target raised to $118 from $110 at SunTrust
SunTrust analyst Michael Ciarmoli raised his price target on Woodward (WWD) to $118 and kept his Buy rating after its Q2 earnings beat and raised outlook for FY19. The analyst says the company's Aerospace segment is benefiting from strength across its markets and does not expect it to be affected by Boeing's (BA) 737 MAX grounding. Ciarmoli also points to the 16% organic growth of Woodward's Industrial segment and outperformance in its recent L'Orange acquisition.

Woodward price target raised to $110 from $96 at Barrington
Barrington analyst Chris Howe raised his price target for Woodward to $110 from $96 after hosting investor meetings with management. The outlook for aerospace is positive due to demand for new fuel-efficient aircraft, global passenger and cargo traffic record levels, high load factors and new operators taking on next-generation aircraft, Howe tells investors in a research note. Despite the recent rally in the shares, the analyst believes upside remains as the company "moves towards its conservative long-term targets." He maintains an Outperform rating on Woodward.

Woodward initiated with an Outperform at William Blair

After six years of "robust" investment for new capacity and products, Woodward is entering a period of accelerating profitable organic growth. He believes the company is "exceptionally well positioned" to generate "sustainable" double-digit earnings growth despite the current Boeing (BA) 737 Max grounding.

Ametek, ITT among top potential acquirers in industrial space, says KeyBanc
KeyBanc analysts Jeff Hammond and Steve Barger think moderating organic growth expectations in 2019 due to tough year over year comps may drive industrials to increasingly look toward inorganic avenues for market outgrowth, or to potentially divest businesses to right-size portfolios. The analysts view Ametek (AME), ITT (ITT), Graco (GGG), and Timken (TKR) as the top potential acquirers, and think Actuant (ATU), Colfax (CFX), Eaton (ETN), Kaman (KAMN), NN, Inc. (NNBR), and Milacron (MCRN) could benefit most from a strategic divestiture.
