Walmart to pitch advertising business at New York event, Reuters reports

Walmart (WMT) will pitch its advertising business to large consumer goods companies and advertising firms in New York next week as it looks to bolster its website and stores as a platform for other companies to attract customers, Reuters' Nandita Bose reports, citing sources. The event, called "5260", marks the retailer's first push to grow its advertising business in a space dominated by Google (GOOG, GOOGL), Facebook (FB) and Amazon (AMZN) and is likely to be attended by hundreds of companies ranging from Procter & Gamble (PG), Unilever (UN, UL) and Coca-Cola (KO) to Glaxosmithkline (GSK) and NBC Universal (CMCSA, CMCSK). Walmart upgraded to Accumulate on expected EBIT gains in U.S. at Gordon Haskett
As previously reported, Gordon Haskett analyst Chuck Grom upgraded Walmart to Accumulate from Hold, stating that his prior concerns about its gross profit margin in the U.S. and in digital were alleviated with the company's Q1 report. His sense is that the company is making considerable progress in the U.S. via better mix, private brand growth and easing transportation costs and Grom said he believes the company's EBIT gains in the U.S. will continue. Grom, who raised his Walmart EPS estimates for FY19 and FY20 above the current Street view, set a $115 price target on the shares.

Under Armour (UA, UAA) upgraded to Overweight from Neutral at JPMorgan with analyst Matthew Boss citing his meeting with management, including CEO Kevin Plank, and saying the clear tone from the top was "controlled confidence" in the brand direction with "disciplined" fiscal 2020 global top- and bottom-line growth acceleration. 3. Philip Morris (PM) upgraded to Neutral from Underperform at BofA/Merrill with analyst Lisa Lewandowski saying IQOS, the company's heated tobacco product, is gaining traction in several European and Asian markets, the FDA approved the pre-market application for the sale of IQOS in the U.S., and management has reset IQOS commercialization expectations, among other reasons. 4. Walmart (WMT) upgraded to Accumulate from Hold at Gordon Haskett with analyst Chuck Grom saying he believes the company's EBIT gains in the U.S. will continue. 5. United Therapeutics (UTHR) upgraded to Neutral from Sell at UBS with analyst Carter Gould saying that after a 26% stock price decline since late March, when Sandoz launched generic Remodulin, the risk reward on the stock has become more balanced. Walmart's Q1 'very encouraging for bullish thesis', says BMO Capital
BMO Capital analyst Kelly Bania kept her Outperform rating and $115 price target on Walmart after its Q1 earnings beat, saying the quarter was "very encouraging" for her bullish thesis on the stock. The analyst cites Walmart's improving e-commerce profitability and maintains her view that the company stands "well positioned" to leverage its technology and supply chain investments. Bania adds that Walmart's grocery momentum is also accelerating as its mid-single-digit comp increases amid negligible food inflation imply "strong market share gains."

Craig-Hallum downgrades Cray to Hold, but says bidding war possible
Craig-Hallum analyst Chad Bennett downgrade Cray (CRAY) to Hold from Buy after the company announced a deal to be acquired by HP Enterprise (HPE) for $35 per share, but he added that he thinks a bidding war is possible since he doesn't believe the stock buyout price "has even begun to value" Cray's proprietary interconnect technology and its modular software stack for next generation AI/ML workloads. He believes there could be a number of interested parties in Cray including Microsoft (MSFT), Dell (DELL), Intel (INTC), Google (GOOG), Amazon (AMZN) and potentially IBM (IBM).

Google beta of AI hardware platform positive for Broadcom, says JPMorgan
Google (GOOG, GOOGL) last week at its developer's conference announced that it is offering its flagship artificial intelligence/deep learning hardware platform, called TPU, to the public in beta, JPMorgan analyst Harlan Sur tells investors in a research note. The analyst views the announcement as positive for Broadcom (AVGO) as he believes the company has co-developed all three generations of Google's TPU AI processor customer chips. Further, Sur thinks Broadcom has also won Google's next generation TPU 4.0 processor chip design, which he believes is targeted for ramp in 2021. In addition, the analyst adds that Broadcom has less than 2% total revenue exposure to Huawei. Sur reiterates an Overweight rating on Broadcom with a $365 price target.

Sony, Microsoft JV a 'surprsing turn' in 'battle for living room,' says Baird
Baird analyst Colin Sebastian said he views the joint venture pact between competitors Microsoft (MSFT) and Sony (SNE) on cloud-based gaming services as both "surprising" and a validation of the emerging market for streaming. The two companies clearly view video games as strategically important enough to put aside their intense competition and see Google (GOOGL) as a legitimate competitor and the Stadia streaming platform as a credible threat, said Sebastian, who added that he does not believe this means Sony and Microsoft will forego their separate console hardware platforms. He also believes that video game developers and publishers should benefit from the intensifying battle among platform companies for share of the game market and the "living room audience." Publicly traded game makers include Activision Blizzard (ATVI), Electronic Arts (EA) and Take-Two (TTWO).

The analyst believes the possibility of another buyer coming in over the top is fairly low, but notes that the price is "too low" based on the opportunities Cray has in front of it over the next few years. Furthermore, Bennett believes there would be a number of interested parties in Cray including Microsoft (MSFT), Dell (DELL), Intel (INTC), Alphabet (GOOG), Amazon (AMZN), and potentially IBM (IBM).

Wedbush bullish on Uber, initiates coverage with an Outperform
As previously reported, Wedbush analyst Ygal Arounian started coverage of Uber (UBER) with an Outperform and $65 price target. The analyst notes that the ridesharing industry has become one of the most transformational growth sectors of the global consumer market over the past five years, with Uber establishing itself as the clear number 1 player and paving a similar road to what Amazon (AMZN) did to transform retail/e-commerce and Facebook (FB) did for social media. The brand loyalty of Uber is hard to dispute as the company continues to attract drivers and consumers "illustrating an impressive formula" to go after a $5.7T opportunity globally on transportation, which swells to $7T-$8T when including third-party food delivery and freight/logistics, he contends.

Alphabet price target lowered to $1,300 from $1,375 at JMP Securities
JMP Securities analyst Ronald Josey said competition "may have played a role" in Alphabet's (GOOGL) worse than expected Q1 revenue given that better than expected advertising results have recently been reported by Facebook (FB), Twitter (TWTR), Snap (SNAP) and Amazon (AMZN). However, he believes the "majority of the deceleration was self-imposed," he tells investors in a post-earnings research note. Some of the company's product changes, such as changes at YouTube's recommendation engine, likely acted as a headwind, the analyst surmised. Josey sees benefits from investments in hardware and Google Cloud and thinks that multiple monetization opportunities remain for Alphabet, leading him to maintain an Outperform rating on the stock, though he lowered his price target on shares to $1,300 from $1,375.

Alphabet sub-20% sales growth to bring share pressure, says JPMorgan
JPMorgan analyst Doug Anmuth expects Alphabet (GOOGL) shares to be under pressure in the near-term given the company's sub-20% revenue growth in Q1 and downward earnings revisions. The exact drivers of Alphabet's slowing sales are unclear, and frustration around the company's lack of transparency will only increase, Anmuth tells investors in a post-earnings research note. The analyst, however, points out that Alphabet has maintained 20%-plus growth for a very long time, off a large base. He maintains an Overweight rating on the stock with a $1,310 price target but prefers shares of Facebook (FB), Amazon.com (AMZN) and Netflix (NFLX) to Alphabet.

Gilead shares reflect 'undue bearish outlook,' says Jefferies
Gilead Sciences (GILD) is trading at a 10 times price-to-earnings multiple, which reflects an "undue bearish outlook," Jefferies analyst Michael Yee tells investors in a research note. This implies the stock should be at $80-$85, says Yee. A bear case on the HIV business is $35-$40 per share, which assumes a full cliff post 2025 or GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) taking "massive" share with doublets and long-acting, adds the analyst. Sprint, T-Mobile headlines positive for Dish, Intelsat, says Goldman Sachs
Goldman Sachs analyst Brett Feldman, while taking no view on the outcome of the proposed merger between Sprint (S) and T-Mobile (TMUS), laid out his thoughts for other industry participants following the Wall Street Journal's report that the Department of Justice is unlikely to approve the deal as currently structured. The analyst believes investors will initially see the headlines as negative for the other major wireless carriers, namely AT&T (T) and Verizon (VZ), since they "create uncertainty over long-term industry structure." Further, investors will initially see these headlines as a slight positive for tower operators American Tower (AMT), Crown Castle (CCI) and SBA Communications (SBAC) as they "imply less risk of material cell site decommissioning," Feldman told investors earlier in a research note. The analyst also thinks investors will view the Journal's report as positive for owners of excess spectrum such as Dish (DISH) and Intelsat (I) and a slight positive for cable operators like Altice USA (ATUS), Charter (CHTR) and Comcast (CMCSA).

Citi still bullish on Disney, boosts price target to $160 from $132
Citi analyst Jason Bazinet raised his price target for Disney (DIS) to $160 from $132 saying he remains bullish on the stock despite the recent rally. Disney closed yesterday down 62c to $139.30. The company's $5B in content outlays, split between licensing existing content and new originals, maps to the low-end of Disney+ subscriber guidance, Bazinet tells investors in a research note. The "more robust" Disney+ subscriber outlook provided by Disney adds $11 to the analyst's equity value. Further, Disney disclosed at its investor day that it would book intracompany content payments from direct-to-consumer to the "Core" of Disney on a gross basis. By 2024, Bazinet expects these payments to lift "Core" Disney earnings by 90c per share. This helps explain the recent $15 share rally, according to the analyst. He also expects Disney to acquire the 33% of Hulu currently held by Comcast (CMCSA) and the opening of two Star Wars parks. Bazinet keeps a Buy rating on Disney.

Disney will have 'high class problem' if it has to pay more for Hulu, says Morgan Stanley
After Disney (DIS) and Comcast (CMCSA) announced a new agreement regarding their Hulu joint venture, Morgan Stanley analyst Benjamin Swinburne said the new pact is indicative of the priorities of both companies. Operational control of Hulu give Disney a chance to bundle the service with Disney Plus and/or ESPN Plus, allows for international expansion and likely creates some cost synergies, said Swinburne, who added that Disney will have "a high class problem" if it turns out if Hulu is appraised at a higher value when it comes time to buy out Comcast. For Comcast, the new deal gives it downside protection and content flexibility as it builds out its own streaming plans, the analyst added. He keeps Overweight ratings on both Disney and Comcast, concluding that the deal between the media giants will accelerate the transition from legacy TV to streaming.

Morgan Stanley analyst Benjamin Swinburne resumed coverage of Comcast (CMCSA) with an Overweight rating and $46 price target, stating that while the burden of proof is on the company to successfully execute its Sky (SKYAY) acquisition, the stock's multiple has compressed even though his expectation for Comcast's consolidated growth outlook has not materially changed. In the near-term, Sky will be accretive to that growth rate, Swinburne added. He also said that Comcast "remains first and foremost a US cable business," and he sees broadband as a secular growth driver with a long-term runway.

Workday price target raised to $216 from $179 at KeyBanc
KeyBanc analyst Brent Bracelin raised his price target for Workday (WDAY) to $216 from $179 on improving cloud growth prospects. The analyst notes that analysis of Key First Look Data: Jobs has exposed an unannounced F50 HCM win at UPS (UPS) that began hiring for the global HR transformation team in January. The data also exposed unannounced F100 HCM wins at Comcast (CMCSA; CMCSK), CapitalOne (COF), and Centene (CNC), although job dates suggest these deals may have closed in the October quarter. The January data also exposed a new cloud financials win at Adecco (AHEXY), Bracelin adds. The analyst reiterates an Overweight rating on Workday's shares.

WWE shares 'on sale' after pullback, says Morgan Stanley
Morgan Stanley analyst Benjamin Swinburne noted that WWE (WWE) shares are down by over 30% this month, which he sees as a "rare opportunity" to buy shares of a company that he sees having both highly visible earnings growth and growing intellectual property value. He attributes the rapid selloff primarily to a broader market rotation out of risk assets due to rising interest rates and concerns over achieving long-term growth, but he thinks this "does not make sense" given that WWE's EBITDA opportunity "is not a decade away, but rather a year away," Swinburne tells investors. Two contracts underwritten by Comcast (CMCSA) and Fox (FOXA) drive the bulk of its earnings growth and its financial outlook has no immediate exposure to ratings or cord-cutting, Swinburne added. While he trimmed his price target on WWE shares to $95 from $105 after bumping up his investment expectations for 2019, the analyst maintains an Overweight rating on the stock.
