Fly Intel: What to watch in HP Inc.'s earnings report

HP Inc. (HPQ) is scheduled to report results of its fiscal second quarter after the market close on May 23, with a conference call scheduled for 5:30 pm ET. What to watch for: 1. GUIDANCE: Along with its last report, HP INc. guided for Q2 earnings per share in a range of 50c-53c. At the time, analysts were expecting the company to reports Q2 EPS of 53c, but that consensus estimate has since fallen to 51c. Meanwhile, the company said in its last report that it expects EPS for fiscal 2019 of $2.12-$2.22. At the time, Wall Street saw HP reporting FY19 of $2.20, but that figure has since slipped to $2.15. 2. HUAWEI: Last week, President Donald Trump issued an executive order "declaring a national emergency to deal with the threat posed by the unrestricted acquisition or use in the United States of information and communications technology or services designed, developed, manufactured, or supplied by persons owned by, controlled by, or subject to the jurisdiction or direction of foreign adversaries." The move by the president will effectively bar sales by Chinese networking company Huawei, and HP Inc. is among the companies that may be affected by such news, along with Cisco (CSCO), Juniper (JNPR), Ciena (CIEN), F5 Networks (FFIV), and Nokia (NOK). Meanwhile, the Verge reported earlier this week that Microsoft (MSFT) has cut Huawei's MateBook X laptop from its store, since it's "no longer a viable alternative to Apple's (AAPL) MacBook Pro or the HP Spectre x360 and even Microsoft's own surface lineup." 3. IDC PC MONITOR MARKET: According to International Data Corporation's Worldwide Quarterly PC Monitor Tracker in late March, the global market for PC monitors experienced an overall year-over-year fall of 2.1% in the fourth quarter of 2018, though quarterly growth remained unchagned with global monitor shipments totaling 31.4M units. According to the IDC, HP saw more than 4.5M units shipped, resulting in 14.6% share in Q4, putting it behind Dell (DELL) and just ahead of Lenovo (LNVGY) in terms of market share. 4. GARTNER PC SHIPMENTS: According to preliminary results released by Gartner in mid-April, worldwide PC shipments totaled 58.5M units the first quarter of 2019, a 4.6% decrease from the first quarter of the previous year. "We saw the start of a rebound in PC shipments in mid-2018, but anticipation of a disruption by CPU shortages impacted all PC markets as vendors allocated to the higher-margin business and Chromebook segment," said Mikako Kitagawa, senior principal analyst at Gartner. "While the consumer market remained weak, the mix of product availability may have also hindered demand. In contrast, Chromebook (GOOG) shipments increased by double digits compared with the first quarter of 2018, despite the shortage of entry-level CPUs. Including Chromebook shipments, the total worldwide PC market decline would have been 3.5% in the first quarter of 2019."

Xerox could be strategic acquisition target after EFI deal, says Citi
Citi analyst Jim Suva points out that the buyout of Electronics for Imaging (EFII) by private equity contains a 45 day "go-shop" period. With the print industry maturing, the analyst believes both HP Inc. (HPQ) and XRX (XRX) will now "more aggressively look" at Electronics for Imaging as a strategic asset in terms of revenue growth, earnings accretion, and cash flow. Further, Xerox could be a strategic acquisition for private equity or HP given its annual cash flow of $1B-plus and cost structure that could be significantly reduced, Suva tells investors in a research note. The analyst keeps a Buy rating on Electronics for Imaging and boosted his price target for the shares to $44.

Morgan Stanley upgrades Lumentum, downgrades Acacia in optical ratings shake up
As previously reported, Morgan Stanley analyst Meta Marshall upgraded Lumentum (LITE) to Overweight from Equal Weight and downgraded Acacia Communications (ACIA) to Underweight from Equal Weight as she believes thematic transitions in the optical sector are being misvalued in the market. On Lumentum, she thinks 3D sensing estimates should be reset and believes the remainder of the year presents more opportunity for upside. Marshall raised her price target on Lumentum shares to $65 from $55. On Acacia, Marshall thinks investors are over-extrapolating its earnings power and not assigning enough risk to customer concentration. However, the analyst raised her price target on Acacia shares to $44 from $38, noting that she is early with her downgrade and believes the company could "post meaningful beats" in the next 6-9 months. Outside of these two outlier ratings, Marshall has an Equal Weight rating on optical components providers Infinera (INFN), II-VI (IIVI) and Ciena (CIEN).

JPMorgan a buyer of Ciena and Lumentum into Q1 results, downgrades Sensata
JPMorgan analyst Samik Chatterjee names Ciena (CIEN) and Lumentum (LITE) his top Networking Equipment picks into the Q1 reporting season. The analyst is a buyer of both stocks into the prints. Following the rallies year-to-date, investors might need to be more selective relative to opportunities for further share price upside heading into earnings, Chatterjee tells investors in a pre-earnings research note. He believes the overall capital expenditure environment remains positive and that momentum into 5G investment spend appears to be building, particularly in North America. This is likely provide greater visibility to companies relative to their already stated full-year targets, says Chatterjee. However, with investor optimism around 5G infrastructure investment as well as the positive impact on growth from a potential U.S.-China trade deal, the analyst expects share price performances to be largely muted on the back of Q1 earnings. Nonetheless, he sees upside opportunity in both Ciena and Lumentum. Chatterjee also reinstated coverage of CommScope (COMM) and upgraded the shares to Overweight from Neutral, upgraded Viavi Solutions (VIAV) to Neutral from Underweight, and downgraded Sensata (ST) to Neutral from Overweight. A further multiple re-rating of Sensata shares appears unlikely in an environment of moderating auto production this year, contends the analyst.

Goldman sees risks to Nokia estimates, downgrades shares to Sell
Goldman Sachs analyst Alexander Duval downgraded Nokia (NOK) to Sell from Neutral and cut his price target for the shares to $5.50 from $6.40. Consensus estimates have further downside as analysts factor in lower Networks revenues, a more conservative margin trajectory and "more muted" growth in the Nokia's "highly profitable" Patents business, Duval tells investors in a research note. The analyst reduced his Networks growth rate on "subseasonal" growth in the first half of 2019 as well as management's "cautious" statements. Duval says these contrast with his industry discussions suggesting a wireless market growth inflection, due to 5G. He sees risks to Nokia's market share "given newsflow implying share gains by its main competitor, Ericsson" (ERIC).

Recent actions elevated near-term risks for Apple in China, says Credit Suisse
Credit Suisse analyst Matthew Cabral notes that three recent actions have elevated the near-term risks for Apple in China, namely the Trump administration's tariff increase on $200B of Chinese exports, the USTR listing of an additional $300B in Chinese exports that could be subject to future tariffs, and the U.S. Department of Commerce adding Huawei to its "Entity List." While Apple's products largely fall outside the scope of current U.S. tariffs on Chinese goods, the analyst is more concerned with potential "second derivative" impacts on local demand and implications of a further escalation from here. Further, he sees a potential impact to margins and/or unit sales if the administration moves forward with tariffs on the additional $300B of Chinese exports and sees increased risk of retaliation following the recent addition of Huawei to the "Entity List." Cabral reiterates a Neutral rating and $209 price target on the shares.

Qualcomm headlines read worse than 'likely reality,' says Morgan Stanley
U.S. district court judge Lucy Koh's ruling in favor of the U.S. Federal Trade Commission in its case against Qualcomm (QCOM) "may appear daunting," but it is unlikely to change the reality for the company, argues Morgan Stanley analyst James Faucette, who views today's selloff as a buying opportunity. The FTC case focused on standard essential patents, but all of Qualcomm's agreements outside of China, including its recent agreement with Apple (AAPL), bundle SEP and non-SEP together, according to Faucett, who added that Qualcomm "has full pricing power over" non-SEP pacts. Also, Koh's ruling is similar to findings in Taiwan and Korea and he believes Qualcomm was able to adjust its licensing agreements in those countries to be consistent with local rulings, Faucette tells investors. The analyst, who thinks the "headlines read more negatively than they should," keeps an Overweight rating and $95 price target on Qualcomm shares.

Qualcomm price target lowered to $90 from $105 at Canaccord

While it is difficult to determine the timing of a potential stay and how Qualcomm will renegotiate licensing deals, Walkley tells investors in a research note that he believes the recent agreement with Apple (AAPL) is binding despite the judge's ruling and notes this ruling covers standard essential patents and many of Qualcomm's licensing deals cover Qualcomm's entire patent portfolio. The analyst maintains a Buy rating, despite the ruling creating increased uncertainty on Qualcomm's future royalty rates, ability to collect if customers decide to stop paying during a potential required renegotiation, and scope of changes potentially made to its global licensing agreements.

Apple Services likely to decelerate to less than 10% growth, says Bernstein
Bernstein analyst A.M. Sacconaghi, Jr. notes that besides iPhone replacement cycles, he considers the second biggest controversy around Apple's stock to be the long-term sustainability of growth in Services. Given that Apple's installed base should be relatively flat going forward, Services growth will likely depend entirely on additional ARPU expansion, whether through new offerings or increased monetization of existing businesses, he contends. His simple illustrative forecast suggests that Apple's existing Services businesses are likely to decelerate to perhaps less than 10% growth within 3-4 years. Therefore, for Services to buoy the rest of the company, it remains imperative for Apple to successfully ramp new Services, Sacconaghi adds.

Nomura Instinet analyst Patrick Chen upgraded Lenovo to Buy and raised his price target for the shares to HKD8.2 from HKD5.6. The earnings risks for Lenovo have largely reduced with the successful execution of smartphone business transitions, share gain at the data center hardware market, and strengthening leadership in the PC space, Chen tells investors in a research note. He believes the stock's risk/reward is "turning attractive" and sees potential for 22.9% upside.

Google beta of AI hardware platform positive for Broadcom, says JPMorgan
Google (GOOG, GOOGL) last week at its developer's conference announced that it is offering its flagship artificial intelligence/deep learning hardware platform, called TPU, to the public in beta, JPMorgan analyst Harlan Sur tells investors in a research note. The analyst views the announcement as positive for Broadcom (AVGO) as he believes the company has co-developed all three generations of Google's TPU AI processor customer chips. Further, Sur thinks Broadcom has also won Google's next generation TPU 4.0 processor chip design, which he believes is targeted for ramp in 2021. In addition, the analyst adds that Broadcom has less than 2% total revenue exposure to Huawei. Sur reiterates an Overweight rating on Broadcom with a $365 price target.

Sony, Microsoft JV a 'surprsing turn' in 'battle for living room,' says Baird
Baird analyst Colin Sebastian said he views the joint venture pact between competitors Microsoft (MSFT) and Sony (SNE) on cloud-based gaming services as both "surprising" and a validation of the emerging market for streaming. The two companies clearly view video games as strategically important enough to put aside their intense competition and see Google (GOOGL) as a legitimate competitor and the Stadia streaming platform as a credible threat, said Sebastian, who added that he does not believe this means Sony and Microsoft will forego their separate console hardware platforms. He also believes that video game developers and publishers should benefit from the intensifying battle among platform companies for share of the game market and the "living room audience." Publicly traded game makers include Activision Blizzard (ATVI), Electronic Arts (EA) and Take-Two (TTWO).
