This year's Electronic Entertainment Expo, or E3, is currently underway in Los Angeles, California, with many of the biggest companies in the video game sector showcasing new content, announcing new services and hardware, and providing updates on already released titles. Here are some of the biggest storylines from this year's event:
EA: While Electronic Arts (EA) wasn't technically at E3 this year, it had a presence in Los Angeles with its EA Play event on Saturday. During EA Play, the company unveiled its first ever gameplay trailer for "Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order," which Stephens analyst Jeff Cohen told The Fly last week "looks like it's going to be a hit." In addition, EA announced that Season 2 of "Apex Legends" will start July 2 and come with a new playable character.
Meanwhile, EA announced partnerships with Zoink Games, Glowmade and Hazelight Studios to create three new independent development projects coming to consoles and PC, namely "Lost in Random," "RustHeart," and another project from "A Way Out" developer Hazelight.
MICROSOFT: Microsoft (MSFT) kicked off E3 with a two-hour presentation on Sunday, during which it announced that Project Scarlett, its next-generation Xbox console, will be released during the 2020 holiday season, with "Halo Infinite" as a launch title. The company said during its reveal that it places an emphasis on reducing load times. The company added that Xbox One consoles will get "console streaming," also known as remote play, starting in October.
On the software side, Microsoft showed trailers for its upcoming shooter "Gears 5," "Cyberpunk 2077" from Poland's CD Projekt Red, the western release of Sega's (SGAMY) "Phantasy Star Online 2," and dozens more. Of note, the company said it had acquired "Psychonauts" developer Double Fine productions.
UBISOFT: Ubisoft's (UBSFY) E3 presser occurred yesterday, during which the French game maker showcased upcoming action titles "Watch Dogs Legion," "Ghost Recon: Breakpoint," and more content for "The Division 2." The company also unveiled two brand new intellectual properties: action-RPG "Gods & Monsters" and action sports title "Roller Champions."
Notably, Ubisoft announced a PC game subscription service called UPLAY+, which for $14.99 a month will give customers access to the game maker's wide library of titles old and new. The company added that UPLAY+ will be available on Stadia, Google's (GOOG) upcoming game streaming service, in 2020. Ubisoft also announced that a film based on "The Division" is currently being made with Netflix (NFLX).
NINTENDO: Nintendo (NTDOY) had the final major press conference of E3, during which it provided additional information on upcoming Switch titles "The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening," "Animal Crossing: New Horizons," "Luigi's Mansion 3," "Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3," and "Fire Emblem: Three Houses." In addition, the company said that ports of Capcom's (CCOEY) "Resident Evil 5" and "Resident Evil 6," as well as ports of CD Projekt Red's "The Witcher 3" and Square Enix's "Collection of Mana," will be coming to the Switch soon. Among the new game announcements were "Mario & Sonic at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games," made alongside Sega, which is coming out in November, and a sequel to 2017's "The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild," which Nintendo said is "currently in development."
