Comcast, Charter to sell Apple products as part of iPhone deal, CNBC says

Comcast (CMCSA) and Charter's (CHTR) deal to carry Apple's (AAPL) iPhone in their wireless services includes agreements to sell other Apple devices, CNBC's Alex Sherman and Kif Leswing report, citing people familiar with the matter. Both cable companies understood their wireless offerings would not be able to compete with Verizon (VZ), AT&T (T), Sprint (S), and T-Mobile (TMUS) if companies did not carry the iPhone, which gave Apple a lot of leverage in negotiations, Sherman and Leswing added, citing those people. B. Riley FBR concerned ITC ruling against Comcast not strong enough
B. Riley FBR analyst Eric Wold says that while the International Trade Commission's ruling that Comcast (CMCSA) infringed upon two claims of Tivo's (TIVO) '011 patent is a positive for Tivo, he's concerned the decision is not strong enough. There are ways for Comcast to work around the patent, Wold tells investors in a research note. However, he's optimistic for an eventual settlement/license with Comcast and believes Tivo shares "are pricing in less than a zero-percent chance." The analyst keeps a Buy rating on Tivo with an $18 price target.

Fly Intel: Top five analyst upgrades
Catch up on today's top five analyst upgrades with this list compiled by The Fly: 1. Citi (C) upgraded to Buy from Neutral at Goldman Sachs with analyst Richard Ramsden saying he sees a "realistic path" to a 13% return on tangible common equity in 2020 for Citi, or 100 basis points ahead of market expectations, which he notes is not contingent on either higher interest rates or strengthening global growth trends. 2. Comcast (CMCSA) upgraded to Buy from Neutral at Guggenheim with analyst Mike McCormack saying the company's successful pivot from primarily a video distributor to a connectivity company "has been fairly smooth." 3. Zynga (ZNGA) upgraded to Overweight from Equal Weight at Stephens with analyst Jeff Cohen saying the continued acceleration of recent acquisitions and the fact that Social Casino could be poised for a second half re-acceleration give him additional confidence in Zynga's live service portfolio. 4. Penumbra (PEN) upgraded to Overweight from Neutral at JPMorgan with analyst Robert Marcus saying the Street is overly focused on competitive entrants to the stroke aspiration market. 5. Cypress Semiconductor (CY) upgraded to Equal Weight from Underweight at Morgan Stanley with analyst Craig Hettenbach citing press reports indicating that the company is exploring strategic options. Comcast upgraded to Buy on successful connectivity pivot at Guggenheim
As previously reported, Guggenheim analyst Mike McCormack upgraded Comcast to Buy from Neutral, contending that the company's successful pivot from primarily a video distributor to a connectivity company "has been fairly smooth." The results in Q1 showed that multiple-system operators and cable operators are outgaining telecom rivals in the broadband space meaningfully, said McCormack, who added that he expects continued broadband gains. Additionally, NBCU keeps operating at "a very high level" and the Wireless business is showing steady gains, according to McCormack, who raised his price target on Comcast shares to $52 from $39.

Sprint, T-Mobile headlines positive for Dish, Intelsat, says Goldman Sachs
Goldman Sachs analyst Brett Feldman, while taking no view on the outcome of the proposed merger between Sprint (S) and T-Mobile (TMUS), laid out his thoughts for other industry participants following the Wall Street Journal's report that the Department of Justice is unlikely to approve the deal as currently structured. The analyst believes investors will initially see the headlines as negative for the other major wireless carriers, namely AT&T (T) and Verizon (VZ), since they "create uncertainty over long-term industry structure." Further, investors will initially see these headlines as a slight positive for tower operators American Tower (AMT), Crown Castle (CCI) and SBA Communications (SBAC) as they "imply less risk of material cell site decommissioning," Feldman told investors earlier in a research note. The analyst also thinks investors will view the Journal's report as positive for owners of excess spectrum such as Dish (DISH) and Intelsat (I) and a slight positive for cable operators like Altice USA (ATUS), Charter (CHTR) and Comcast (CMCSA).

Broadcom, Apple deal closes door on Qualcomm/Qorvo, says Raymond James
Raymond James analyst Chris Caso notes that Broadcom (AVGO) disclosed that it had signed a 2-year contract with Apple (AAPL) for the sale of RF components, similar to a 3-year contract between Broadcom and Apple signed in 2016 but now with the latter sourcing "all of its requirements for such RF front end components and modules" from Broadcom. The analyst believes this closes the door on Qualcomm (QCOM) getting RF content in the 2020 iPhone, while maintaining the status quo for Skyworks (SWKS), which supplied the low band PAD and diversity receive through the term of the last Broadcom/Apple contract. Additionally, Caso thinks the Broadcom agreement also closes the door on the mid/high band opportunity at Apple for Qorvo (QRVO) through 2020.

Apple June quarter China iPhone demand 'in line with expectations,' says Wedbush
Wedbush analyst Daniel Ives tells investors in a research note that all eyes will be on any signs of demand weakness out of China in light of the ongoing U.S.-China trade battle as Apple CEO Tim Cook heads into the next month. Ives says he believes the June quarter China iPhone demand has so far been tracking "in line with expectations," or a "modest" rebound from the softness seen in the December and March quarters, but notes a "nervous" environment across the supply chain. Ives, who maintains an Outperform rating and $235 price target on Apple shares, notes that China represents roughly 20% of all iPhone upgrades over the next 12-18 months.

Antitrust litigation presents risk to Apple App Store model, says Evercore ISI
Evercore ISI analyst Amit Daryanani noted that services will be the primary driver of future growth for Apple (AAPL), but said the shift towards services is not without risk. Pending antitrust litigation from suits brought by Pepper and Spotify could challenge Apple's App Store model while other large publishers could follow the lead of Netflix (NFLX) and circumvent subscription purchasing through an iOS device, said Daryanani . However, he thinks the financial impact, if any, from the Pepper case could take several years to materialize. While he expects litigation to remain a key debate topic on Apple, Daryanani keeps an Outperform rating on the shares with a price target of $205.

Broadcom supply pact with Apple a 'headline positive,' says Morgan Stanley
After Broadcom (AVGO) disclosed a new two-year supply agreement with Apple (AAPL) for RF components, Morgan Stanley analyst Craig Hettenbach called the news "a headline positive" and reminder of the company's leading edge technology in RF. However, he does not anticipate a material impact on Broadcom estimates in the near-term, Hettenbach noted. His checks have indicated that Broadcom appears to be positioned to regain some share in RF at Apple from Qorvo (QRVO), added the analyst, who keeps an Equal Weight rating on Broadcom shares.

UBS analyst John Hodulik downgraded Verizon Communications to Neutral from Buy with an unchanged price target of $59. The stock closed yesterday down 55c to $58.18. AT&T, Dish satellite video combination would make sense, says JPMorgan
It would make sense for AT&T (T) and Dish (DISH) to combine video operations, nearly two decades after an attempt failed in 2002, JPMorgan analyst Philip Cusick tells investors in a research note after press reports discussed a combination of Dish and DirecTV. The analyst believes the dis-synergies of pulling DirecTV away from AT&T's U-verse "in buying power would be value destructive." The analyst, however, does not think the companies are in discussions today, and he sees both "regulatory and personality issues that would have to be overcome to get to a deal." He reiterates Overweight ratings on AT&T and Dish and notes his price targets of $38 from $40, respectively, reflect no potential deal.

AT&T revenue is off to a worse start for the first half than the company had expected as the focus on cost cutting and debt reduction within AT&T continues, Ader tells investors in a research note. State AGs may challenge Sprint, T-Mobile deal even if DOJ approves, says Cowen
Cowen analyst Paul Gallant said he believes that the Department of Justice is likely to approve T-Mobile's (TMUS) deal to buy Sprint (S) despite the Bloomberg report claiming that the DOJ is leaning against signing off on the agreement, with the main reason for his view being the belief that the White House really cares about beating China in 5G. However, he still sees significant risk at the state AG level, noting that Maryland AG Brian Frosch was quoted by Bloomberg as saying that "consumers are going to suffer in terms of price, in terms of quality, in terms of opportunities." Even if the DOJ approves the deal, state AGs have the authority to challenge and they might, Gallant tells investors.
