GameStop says new 'Call of Duty' most pre-ordered video game following E3

GameStop (GME) said that it is revealing the top 10 most sought-after videogames coming out of E3 based on the number of customer pre-orders from the world's largest videogame retailer. The following top 10 videogames were revealed or confirmed during E3 and are listed in pre-order ranking from GameStop's database: Activision Blizzard's (ATVI) "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare," Nintendo's (NTDOY) 'Pokemon Sword/Shield," Square Enix's "Final Fantasy VII Remake," CD Projekt Red's "Cyberpunk 2077," Take-Two's (TTWO) "Borderlands 3," Nintendo's "Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening," EA's (EA) "Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order," Microsoft's (MSFT) "Gears 5," Nintendo's "Super Mario Maker 2," and Activision's "Crash Team Racing: Nitro-Fueled."

Benchmark cuts GameStop price target to $5 as business 'burns to the ground'

He also reduced his price target on the stock from $9 to $5 "as business burns to the ground," telling investors that he sees the company having "little value" amid the industry's on-going transition to the digital economy.

GameStop price target lowered to $7 from $8 at Loop Capital
Loop Capital analyst Anthony Chukumba lowered his price target on GameStop to $7 and kept his Hold rating after its "weak" Q1 results that showed sales declines in the company's "crucial" new video game hardware, software, and pre-owned game product categories. The analyst adds that GameStop's deteriorating profitability and eliminated dividend payout signal the management's lost confidence in the company's ability to generate cash flows.

Baird cuts GameStop target to $6 from $11 after 'double whammy' Q1
Baird analyst Colin Sebastian lowered his price target for GameStop to $6 from $11 saying the company reported sales below expectations in Q1 due to continued weakening of used product sales and "somewhat cyclical" hardware declines. Further, the elimination of GameStop's dividend will likely further negative sentiment and narrow the potential shareholder base, Sebastian tells investors in a post-earnings research note titled "Dividend Elimination, Pre-Owned Weakness a Double Whammy." He believes the company's new management "faces an uphill battle" and keeps a Neutral rating on GameStop shares. The stock in premarket trading is down 27%, or $2.11, to $5.71.

Activision Blizzard initiated with a Neutral at Nomura Instinet
Nomura Instinet analyst Andrew Marok last night initiated coverage of Activision Blizzard with a Neutral rating and $49 price target. The company's near-term release roadmap does not appear to provide many opportunities for "notable upside," especially at Blizzard, Marok tells investors in a research note. Outside of "dependable releases" such as the yearly Call of Duty title and semi-annual World of Warcraft expansion, Activision's frontline product pipeline is at a "low point," says the analyst. As such, he sees limited near-term catalysts for the shares.

Sony appeared to be video game hardware winner on Black Friday, says Wedbush
Wedbush analyst Michael Pachter notes that each of the four game retailers he tracked, namely Best Buy (BBY), GameStop (GME), Target (TGT) and Walmart (WMT) offered the Marvel's Spider-Man PlayStation 4 Bundle that included a slim PS4 with a 1TB hard drive and Sony's (SNE) Marvel's Spider-Man for $199.99, as well as the Microsoft's (MSFT) Xbox One S Minecraft Creators Bundle that included an Xbox One S with a 1TB hard drive, a Minecraft full game download, the Starter Pack, the Creators Pack, and 1,000 Minecoins for $199.99. Nintendo's (NTDOY) primary hardware offering was less compelling given that it was priced at the console's standard MSRP, he adds. The only sell-out that the analyst saw over Black Friday was the primary PS4 deal. Pachter expects the Black Friday deals to eventually translate into permanent price cuts for the base PS4 and Xbox One, possibly by this Christmas.

Nvidia can selloff near-term on graphics commentary, says Citi
Citi analyst Atif Malik says his recent supply chain checks indicate discrete graphics gaming demand is expected to remain sluggish thru the September quarter due to a "sharp decline" in mining related demand on falling cryptocurrency prices, channel distributors and partners waiting for Nvidia's (NVDA) new Turing gaming card launch in the October quarter, and weak gaming console sales at Microsoft (MSFT) offset by the Nintendo (NTDOY) Switch. The analyst lowered his July and October quarter estimates for Nvidia to bring them in-line with consensus. He thinks the stock can selloff in the near-term on weaker than expected graphics commentary from TSMC (TSM), who reports on July 19, and AMD (AMD), who reports on July 25. Malik, however, keeps a Buy rating on Nvidia with a $300 price target. He believes his long-term thesis on the shares remains intact.

Sony, Microsoft JV a 'surprsing turn' in 'battle for living room,' says Baird
Baird analyst Colin Sebastian said he views the joint venture pact between competitors Microsoft (MSFT) and Sony (SNE) on cloud-based gaming services as both "surprising" and a validation of the emerging market for streaming. The two companies clearly view video games as strategically important enough to put aside their intense competition and see Google (GOOGL) as a legitimate competitor and the Stadia streaming platform as a credible threat, said Sebastian, who added that he does not believe this means Sony and Microsoft will forego their separate console hardware platforms. He also believes that video game developers and publishers should benefit from the intensifying battle among platform companies for share of the game market and the "living room audience." Publicly traded game makers include Activision Blizzard (ATVI), Electronic Arts (EA) and Take-Two (TTWO).

Wingstop (WING) upgraded to Buy from Hold at Stifel with analyst Chris O'Cull saying the company's system sales growth will remain in mid to high teens for the foreseeable future and generate higher cash flows from increased average unit volumes thanks to its national advertising and digital ordering initiatives. 3. National Beverage (FIZZ) upgraded to Neutral from Sell at UBS with analyst Sean King citing valuation. 4. Take-Two (TTWO) upgraded to Market Perform from Underperform at BMO Capital with analyst Gerrick Johnson with the threat of an economic downturn, video game stocks will be increasingly seen as "safe havens for investors." 5. Mirati Therapeutics (MRTX) upgraded to Buy from Neutral at Citi with analyst Yigal Nochomovitz saying he believes Mirati's KRAS G12Ci has potential to exceed AMG510's 50% overall response rate in non-small cell lung cancer. Take-Two price target raised to $95 from $80 at BMO Capital
BMO Capital analyst Gerrick Johnson raised his price target on Take-Two to $95 after its above-consensus Q4 earnings, saying that while net bookings missed expectations, lower-than-expected internal royalties drove the bottom-line beat. The analyst notes that the company's core titles like NBA 2K and GTA Online have shown continued strength, but also views the performance of Red Dead Redemption 2 as disappointing. Johnson also keeps his Underperform rating on the stock, warning that monetization of Red Dead Redemption could fall below current expectations with added concern about the potential changes in the video game industry driving lower valuation multiples.

DOJ 'bark worse than the bite,' FAANG breakups not likely, says Wedbush
Wedbush analyst Daniel Ives notes that the noise is getting louder around regulation and antitrust concerns with FAANG names such as Amazon (AMZN), Facebook (FB), Google (GOOG), and Apple (AAPL), and while this is not a new issue per se, there is growing rhetoric around big tech's grip on e-commerce, digital advertising, the app ecosystem, social media, and search among other areas of the tech food chain. The analyst ultimately believes this is more noise versus the start of broader structural changes across the tech food chain and will likely result in business model tweaks and potential DOJ/FTC fines in a worst-case scenario rather than forced breakups of the underlying businesses. That said, Ives acknowledges that these potential DOJ probes could be an overhang on the stocks, but would encourage investors to focus on the fundamentals in the near-term as any probe would take many years to complete as witnessed first-hand with Microsoft (MSFT), which proved to be more noise than a structural jolt to its business model. Further, the analyst believes that Congress will investigate claims of anticompetitive behavior, but ultimately expects a "no harm, no foul" outcome on these FAANG names.

Arista Networks retreat presents opportunity to add to positions, says Argus
Argus analyst Jim Kelleher kept his Buy rating and $320 price target on Arista Networks (ANET), saying that while the company offered a "generally upbeat" presentation at its June 6th investor day, the stock price fell about 4% on a "more cautious growth outlook." The analyst notes however that Arista's announced campus strategy refinement and expanded partnership with Microsoft (MSFT) Azure highlight the widening of its available market. Kelleher adds that the company's stock price was also "slammed" by about 15% after its Q1 earnings in May, but sees the decline as an opportunity to add to positions as Arista works through the "digestive phase" in 2019 and positions itself for strong growth among "cloud titans" resuming in 2020.

Publishers taking wait-and-see approach on Alphabet's Stadia, says Credit Suisse
After gathering publisher feedback at E3 on the viability of the platform as well as their willingness to publish games on the newly announced Alphabet's (GOOGL) Stadia, Credit Suisse analyst Stephen Ju believes their stance does not diverge from historical wait-and-see approach taken around prior hardware launches from a new entrant. The analyst also notes that this is the first new core segment distribution entrant since Microsoft's (MSFT) Xbox. With that in mind, the cost to port existing code base to Stadia seems to be minimal, which should help reduce friction and improve potential ROI for projects under consideration, he contends. Ju has an Outperform rating and $1,400 price target on the shares.
