UP AFTER EARNINGS: Walmart (WMT), up 7%... Alibaba (BABA), up 4%... J.C. Penney (JCP), up 14%... Canadian Solar (CSIQ), up 11%. ALSO HIGHER: Pivotal Software (PVTL), up 73% after confirming that it is in discussions with VMware (VMW) regarding a potential business combination through a transaction in which VMware would acquire all of the outstanding shares of Class A common stock of the company for cash at a per share price equal to $15.00. DOWN AFTER EARNINGS: Tapestry (TPR), down 8%... Canopy Growth (CGC), down 9%... Cisco (CSCO), down 5%. ALSO LOWER: VMware (VMW), down 3% after proceeding to negotiate definitive agreements with respect to a transaction to acquire all of the outstanding shares of Class A common stock of Pivotal... General Electric (GE), down 3.5% after Harry Markopolos, the accounting expert who raised red flags about Bernie Madoff's Ponzi scheme, released a report on the accounting of General Electric. Walmart price target raised to $115 from $106 at Loop Capital
Loop Capital analyst Andrew Wolf raised his price target on Walmart to $115, saying the company's recently announced consolidation of the U.S. stores and e-commerce divisions' supply chains and financial management is positive for its continued expansion in omnichannel merchandising. The analyst notes that the perception of this consolidation as a sign of "retrenchment and/or infighting at the senior operating ranks" is mistaken. Wolf is keeping his Hold rating on Walmart however, citing its current valuation.

Walmart partnership could serve as driver for Advance Auto Parts, says Credit Suisse
Credit Suisse analyst Seth Sigman notes that Advance Auto (AAP) has launched what appears to be the initial phases of its partnership with Walmart (WMT), adding about 5,000 SKUs to the Walmart website. The analyst ultimately believes that, if done right, this could serve as an incremental driver for Advance Auto Parts, benefiting from Walmart's growing online traffic and product offering. That said, more important for the stock in short term will be improving comps after the slow start and weather impact in Q2, along with instilling confidence in the margin outlook, he contends. Sigman has an Outperform rating and $195 price target on Advance Auto Parts' shares.

PetMed CEO amendment hints at exploration of alternatives, says Craig-Hallum
Craig-Hallum analyst Kevin Ellich noted that PetMed Express (PETS) filed an 8K after the close on Friday to disclose that it amended CEO Mendo Akdag's employment agreement to add the language "for Good Reason" to the "Change in Control" section. He reads this change as a hint that an exploration of strategic alternatives could be upcoming, though he doesn't think there is anything imminent in the works. The analyst, who suspects there is further downside to Street estimates for PetMed given increased competition from Chewy (CHWY), Walmart (WMT), Petco and other online retailers, keeps a Sell rating on PetMed shares.

General Electric fundamentals 'continue to look negative,' says JPMorgan's Tusa
JPMorgan analyst Stephen Tusa came away from General Electric's Q2 results with no change to his "well below consensus view." GE Power needs a positive core profit contribution on $1B in negative mix revenue headwind "to just get back to breakeven," Tusa tells investors in a research note. Further, Aviation needs 35% growth in its Military business to hit guidance, adds the analyst. Despite the Street's enthusiasm around a beat to low guidance, GE's fundamentals "continue to look negative," argues Tusa. He keeps an Underweight rating on shares of General Electric with a $5 price target. The stock closed Friday down 34c to $9.15.

GE set Q2 cash guidance bar 'excessively' low, says Gordon Haskett
Gordon Haskett analyst John Inch said he expects General Electric to significantly beat its Industrial free cash flow guidance of ($1B-$2B) when the company reports second quarter results next week, but that reflects the degree to which GE "set the cash expectations bar at an (excessively) low level," according to Inch. Looking ahead, tougher comparisons and a waning global economic outlook could make for a tougher road in terms of cash flow, said Inch, who keeps an Underperform rating and $7 price target on GE shares.

JPMorgan's Tusa says GE guidance drivers 'low quality,' would sell into strength
JPMorgan analyst Stephen Tusa says General Electric reported an operation miss in Q2 driven by a material miss at its Aviation unit and it also reported free cash flow that missed his estimate. While the company raised its headline guidance, the drivers of the raise "seem low quality" as the company's segments "are trending at best in line," Tusa tells investors. He would sell any strength today in the shares following the report and keeps an Underweight rating on shares of General Electric. The stock is up about 4% in pre-market trading, but Tusa contends that "like in the past, the underlying core fundamentals are actually a bit worse."

GE operational and financial turnaround building momentum, says William Blair
General Electric's Q2 report yesterday "included further tangible evidence" that its operational and financial turnaround is beginning to build momentum, William Blair analyst Nicholas Heymann tells investors in a research note. GE's year-to-date free cash flow use was $2.2B, down $0.8B from the first half of 2018, while its Industrial organic sales grew sequentially to 7% from 5%, Heymann points out. The analyst reaffirms an Outperform rating on the shares. GE's fundamental prospects and underlying value "continue to remain extremely divergent within the investment community," says Heymann. However, he sees "growing irrefutable evidence that the worst is not only past but also that GE's fundamental forward visibility is gradually beginning to improve as its financial stability returns." The analyst pegs GE's underlying intrinsic value, with no value assigned to Power, between $14 and $16 per share. This range now seems to be a "highly feasible base-case valuation" for the stock over the next 6-12 months, according to Heymann. Shares of General Electric closed yesterday up 2c to $10.45.

Cisco price target lowered to $53 from $64 at RBC Capital
RBC Capital analyst Mitch Steves lowered his price target on Cisco (CSCO) to $53 after its "disappointing" Q1 guidance driven by the slowing macro environment and weakness in China revenues. Coupled with yesterday's weaker results from Netapp (NTAP), the analyst believes that the overall IT spending environment is slowing relative to consensus expectations, even though he still sees Cisco as a "better defensive name to own" within the hardware and networking sector. Steves is keeping his Outperform rating on the stock longer term based on its market-leading 50% share in network equipment and its ability to weather the current enterprise spending decline.

Cisco growth drivers ebbing, says Needham
Needham analyst Alex Henderson is keeping his Hold rating on Cisco after its Q4 results, saying that a slowing macro environment is looming while the company's growth drivers are "ebbing". The analyst notes that the company had benefited from a "major upgrade cycle" in Campus that is now approaching three years old and expects the annualized price hikes along with lower tax rates to slow earnings growth. Henderson adds that the bull thesis on Cisco will be further tested since the company will not be a "meaningful 5G play any time soon" and given the "choppy" Data Center spending backdrop.

Invstors overestimating sales growth inflection at Cisco, says Jefferies
Jefferies analyst George Notter lowered his price target for Cisco Systems to $54 from $62 and keeps a Buy rating on the shares. While Cisco guided below Street expectations for the October quarter, the growth rate inflection isn't as bad as it looks due to the lapping of ASC 606 adoption impact and less impact from acquisitions, Notter tells investors in a research note. As such, the analyst thinks investors are overestimating the size of the negative sales growth inflection at Cisco. Further, the company has traditionally been very conservative when reducing expectations, adds Notter.

Pivotal/VMware deal positive for Dell Technologies, says Wells Fargo
Wells Fargo analyst Aaron Rakers notes that VMWare (VMW) disclosed that it is in discussions with Pivotal Software (PVTL) to buy the remainder of the company for $15/share, and a transaction will result in Dell (DELL) increasing its share in VMWare by approximately $2B dollars or 3% increase in ownership. The analyst thinks that the deal is positive for Dell in that it helps streamline the organizations ownership structure potentially leading to a decrease in the company's conglomerate discount. Pivotal Software acquisition not 'clear plug and play fit,' says Wedbush
Wedbush analyst Daniel Ives notes that VMware (VMW) filed a 13D reporting it is currently in negotiations with Pivotal Software (PVTL) to acquire the company. While the underlying cloud assets and complex developer tool ecosystem will add to the VMware product footprint and potentially expand opportunities within its installed base around cross-selling, acquiring this asset is "not a clear plug and play fit" in his opinion. Ives believes shareholders of VMware will have mixed feelings about this news given Pivotal's roots back to Dell/EMC and the history/current ownership structure of Michael Dell between the three companies. The analyst has a Neutral rating and $15 price target on Pivotal's shares.

J.C. Penney looks best positioned to gain share from Sears, says Credit Suisse
Looking at potential near-term same-store sales lift Softlines Retail peers could see from share gains based on proximity to Sears (SHLD) stores amid a possible liquidation, Credit Suisse analyst Michael Binetti says J.C. Penney (JCP) and Burlington Stores (BURL) seem best positioned to gain share in 2019 due to close proximity. And while J.C. Penney looks best positioned to gain share from Sears, the analyst thinks the recent stock run-up is "a short-term bounce." Binetti does not see this as sustainable customer acquisition for J.C. Penney given the increased risk of closing destabilized malls, limited visibility to an improved merchandise strategy, and leverage constraints to growth investing. Overall, the analyst believes that while there may be some near-term share benefit, a Sears liquidation could be a bigger tipping point that will accelerate closures of already weakening U.S. C&D malls.

Goldman downgrades Nordstrom to Sell, cuts price target to $30 from $37
Goldman Sachs analyst Alexandra Walvis downgraded Nordstrom (JWN) to Sell from Neutral and lowered her price target for the shares to $30 from $37. The analyst is taking a "conservative stance" on the retail sector. The headwinds in Q2 have proven persistent, says the analyst, who sees risk that a second half of the year inflection in earnings growth may not materialize for many companies. Walvis recommends a selective approach in Apparel and prefers stocks with "clear" second half catalysts or strategic actions to drive momentum. She reiterates Buy ratings on both Under Armour (UAA) and Tapestry (TPR) and downgraded both Nordstrom and Ross Stores (ROST) to Sell. More tariffs could bring 'near-term pain' for retail margins, says Piper Jaffray
Piper Jaffray analyst Erinn Murphy revisited her views on the Global Lifestyle Brands group after President Trump announced a 10% tariff on all remaining goods coming from China starting September. In her group, Steven Madden (SHOO) and G-III Apparel (GIII) have the most direct incremental exposure to China. Her biggest concern, however, is that the tariffs come right into the back-to-school and holiday season. Goods have been priced and contracts for future orders have been inked, which presents "near-term pain" for gross margins as re-ticketing goods intra-season "can be tricky," Murphy tells investors in a research note. Retail stocks reacted aggressively on yesterday afternoon following Trump's tweet, which creates some opportunities, says Murphy. The analyst would be buyers of Under Armour (UAA), Nike (NKE) and VF Corp. (VFC). These names have diversified global footprints and lower than average exposure in China, she contends. On the flip side, if the Chinese consumer travels less, Ralph Lauren (RL), PVH Corp. (PVH), Tapestry (TPR), Capri Holdings (CPRI) and G-III could be hurt, cautions Murphy.
