Huawei accuses U.S. of disrupting business, WSJ reports

Huawei has accused the U.S. of "using every tool at its disposal" to disrupt its business, including launching cyberattacks on its networks and instructing law enforcement to "menace" its employees, The Wall Street Journal's Dan Strumpf and Chuin-Wei Yap report. Huawei has also denied stealing smartphone-camera technology from Portuguese multimedia producer Rui Oliveira and accused him of "taking advantage of the current geopolitical situation." Huawei suppliers include Micron Technology (MU) and Western Digital (WDC), while makers of optical components, including Oclaro (OCLR), Acacia Communications (ACIA), NeoPhotonics (NPTN), Lumentum (LITE), and Finisar (FNSR), have previously reacted negatively to headlines regarding U.S. enforcement actions and allegations against China's Huawei. II-VI Q3 results show 'strong optical demand', says Piper Jaffray
Piper Jaffray analyst Troy Jensen kept his Overweight rating and $50 price target on II-VI (IIVI) after its Q3 results, saying its Q3 earnings miss was driven by slower than expected 3D sensing revenue growth, even though the demand for its optical business remained strong. The analyst still believes that 3D sensing will be a tailwind for II-VI longer term and also sees its Finisar (FNSR) acquisition tracking according to plan toward a closing in 2-3 months.

Finisar revenue growth remains 'elusive,' says Piper Jaffray
Finisar last night reported December quarter results similar to last quarter with earnings upside but revenues below consensus, Piper Jaffray analyst Troy Jensen tells investors in a research note. The company made improvements in gross margins, but given greater than 70% of its sales are datacom related and the segment continues to see weakness, Jensen adds. As such, "solid revenue growth remains elusive," he says. The analyst maintains a Buy rating on Finisar shares with a $24.50 price target.

Finisar price target lowered to $23 from $25 at MKM Partners
MKM Partners analyst Michael Genovese lowered his price target on Finisar to $23 and kept his Neutral rating after its mixed Q4 results with "soft" revenues and solid earnings. The analyst attributes the shortfall to the "ongoing weakness" in 100G datacom module pricing and also lowers his FY20 EPS view to $1.09 from $1.37 to account for Huawei sales loss, but also believes that the company's Telecom business was likely solid and its 3D Sensing performance was "okay".

Memory summit reinforces Goldman view that NAND pricing set to improve
After attending the Flash Memory Summit on August 6 and 7, Goldman Sachs analyst Mark Delaney said his meetings and talks with industry participants reinforced his view that NAND pricing is already showing signs of improvement and increased his confidence that blended NAND pricing will be up sequentially in the fourth quarter. Meanwhile, he still thinks DRAM pricing is likely to fall in the near-term, but said the rate of Q4 decline could be "somewhat less severe" than he previously expected. Delaney has a Buy rating on Micron (MU), a Neutral rating on Western Digital (WDC) and a Buy rating on Lam Research (LRCX), which he believes is well-positioned to benefit from continued scaling in NAND.

Seagate initiated with an Underweight at Barclays
Barclays analyst Tim Long initiated Seagate (STX) with an Underweight rating and a price target of $37. The analyst's negative view is based on the HDD market being in secular decline, Seagate having been slightly behind Western Digital (WDC) in high capacity nearline drives, and the likelihood that top-line pressure and a potential increase in research and development "could disrupt the capital return to shareholders."

Lynx can see the Micron bull case on Japan-Korea tensions, 'but with caveats'
Lynx Equity Strategies analysts KC Rajkumar and Jahanara Nissar noted that Japan-Korea trade issues have been replaced by headlines of the new bout of U.S.-China trade tensions, but their recent checks in the field shows that the ongoing trade issues between Japan and Korea "show no signs of easing." Given the early signs of downstream players anticipating memory contract prices to turn up in 1-2 months, they said they can see the bull case for Micron, "but with caveats." While export restrictions on semiconductor raw materials can crimp memory output from dominant Korea suppliers, especially in DRAM, there is also the potential that if downstream producers lowered their output in anticipation of a sustained disruption that could depress demand for the semiconductor sector as a whole, Rajkumar and Nissar explain in their note to investors.

On Deck Capital (ONDK) upgraded to Buy from Neutral at BTIG with analyst Giuliano Bologna saying the company's "soft" Q2 results is offset by the $50M share repurchase plan and desire to pursue a bank charter. 3. Pinnacle West (PNW) upgraded to Buy from Hold at Argus with analyst Gary Hovis saying the stock has underperformed over the past month with a 3% decline in spite of the company's "solid fundamentals, improved earnings visibility, and expanding rate base." 4. Mohawk (MHK) upgraded to Neutral from Underperform at Buckingham with analyst Megan McGrath citing her view that flooring industry risks have been more adequately priced into the shares following the 20% pullback in the stock since the company reported Q2 earnings after the close on Thursday. 5. Finisar downgraded to Hold from Buy at Craig-Hallum
Craig-Hallum analyst Richard Shannon downgraded Finisar (FNSR) to Hold from Buy and raised his price target on the shares to $24 from $23. The analyst believes that II-VI's (IIVI) $26/share cash and stock offer for the company, which was a 38% premium to the close on November 8th, is more than a fair deal, given that Lumentum's (LITE) offer premium for Oclaro (OCLR) earlier this year was 27%. Shannon has some doubts about whether this deal will close given the Lumentum/Oclaro deal has not yet closed and the intensifying political standoff between the US and China, but also admits II-VI and Finisar would not have agreed to this deal if there was not a good chance of closing.

Piper remains buyer of Lumentum following yesterday's 33% decline
Piper Jaffray analyst Troy Jensen remains a buyer of Lumentum (LITE) shares following yesterday's 33% decline. The reduced forecast at Apple (AAPL) has nothing to do with lost share for Lumentum, rather it is more indicative of lower sales forecasts at this key account, Jensen tells investors in a research note. The analyst continues to believe the 3D sensing market "will grow handsomely" with Apple and he notes that Android phones are just beginning their adoption. He also sees a pending opportunity for world facing 3D sensing applications. Further, the core telco optics market is in the early innings of an upgrade cycle, which should provide a "nice tailwind" for Lumentum, says Jensen. He also thinks the pending acquisition of Oclaro (OCLR) could also be a catalyst for the shares given the earnings accretion once the merger gets approval. The analyst lowered his price target for Lumentum to $72 from $85 and reiterates an Overweight rating on the name.

JPMorgan boosts Ciena target to $53, sees further share upside
JPMorgan analyst Samik Chatterjee raised his price target for Ciena (CIEN) to $53 from $50 saying he sees further upside in the shares. The analyst sees ~$2B of incremental revenue opportunity for the company through continued consolidation of share away from sub-scale optical system companies, a ~$2.4B opportunity through accelerated share wins from entrenched players, and "strong" growth opportunities in its Metro segment, which he believes is levered to benefit the most from 5G investments. Further, investor sentiment on Ciena shares stands to "improve materially" as competitive concerns relating to Acacia Communications' (ACIA) product look overdone, Chatterjee tells investors in a research note. Goldman says Cisco deal for Acacia positive for Ciena, negative for Infinera
After Cisco (CSCO) announced this morning that it has agreed to acquire Acacia (ACIA) for $70 per share in cash, Goldman Sachs analyst Rod Hall said he sees the proposed deal as a positive for Ciena (CIEN) as he would expect the company to have an opportunity to gain further share. He sees the proposed deal as "incrementally negative" for Infinera (INFN), which is an Acacia customer that does not expect to have its own 800G solution in market until the second half of 2020. Pointing to Lumentum's (LITE) view of itself as an industry consolidator, Hall added that he expects Lumentum shares "to trade off slightly" on the deal news as potential M&A targets increase in value. Hall maintains a Buy rating and $62 price target on Cisco shares following the deal announcement.

JPMorgan favors Ciena, Lumentum and Viavi into Q2 reports
JPMorgan analyst Samik Chatterjee previewed the Q2 earnings reports for the Networking Equipment/IT Hardware space. The analyst favors suppliers with greater exposure to service provider customers, as he's increasingly confident of a spending ramp towards 5G preparedness, relative to suppliers with higher than average exposure to either cable customers or cloud customers, where he believes visibility relative to timing of recovery in customer capex remains low. Chatterjee's top picks going into Q2 earnings are Ciena (CIEN), Lumentum (LITE), and Viavi (VIAV). He's cautious on Arista Networks (ANET) and F5 Networks (FFIV) due to "company-specific challenges" relative to the competitive landscape with the entry of VMware (VMW) into the application delivery controllers market.
