More tariffs could bring 'near-term pain' for retail margins, says Piper Jaffray
Piper Jaffray analyst Erinn Murphy revisited her views on the Global Lifestyle Brands group after President Trump announced a 10% tariff on all remaining goods coming from China starting September. In her group, Steven Madden (SHOO) and G-III Apparel (GIII) have the most direct incremental exposure to China. Her biggest concern, however, is that the tariffs come right into the back-to-school and holiday season. Goods have been priced and contracts for future orders have been inked, which presents "near-term pain" for gross margins as re-ticketing goods intra-season "can be tricky," Murphy tells investors in a research note. Retail stocks reacted aggressively on yesterday afternoon following Trump's tweet, which creates some opportunities, says Murphy. The analyst would be buyers of Under Armour (UAA), Nike (NKE) and VF Corp. (VFC). These names have diversified global footprints and lower than average exposure in China, she contends. On the flip side, if the Chinese consumer travels less, Ralph Lauren (RL), PVH Corp. (PVH), Tapestry (TPR), Capri Holdings (CPRI) and G-III could be hurt, cautions Murphy.

Goldman reiterates Buy on Under Armour after earnings, says Sell Ralph Lauren
Following the company's respective Q2 earnings reports, Goldman Sachs analyst Alexandra Walvis reiterated her Buy rating on Under Armour (UAA) and kept the stock on the firm's Conviction List while she maintained her Sell rating on Ralph Lauren shares. She came away encouraged by Under Armour's turnaround and sees significant potential for growth in both sales and earnings as the company focuses on product, improved distribution and ongoing cost discipline, Walvis tells investors. For Ralph Lauren, she is skeptical on the near-term opportunity for the brand to inflect its revenue growth given challenges in both wholesale and direct-to-consumer in the "increasingly competitive" core apparel environment, Walvis said.

G-III, Yeti have higher than average risk from List 4 tariffs, says Stifel
Stifel analyst Jim Duffy said the direct, unmitigated impact of a proposed 10% tariff on "List 4" goods imported from China is contained to a single digit percentage headwind to calendar 2020 earnings for most of the 18 Sports and Lifestyle Brands companies he covers, though he identified G-III Apparel (GIII), Yeti (YETI) and potentially Dick's Sporting Goods (DKS) as having higher than group average exposure to the risk. He awaits more tariff details before adjusting estimates, but said he is constructive on higher-end and globally diversified brands, such as Lululemon (LULU), Columbia Sportswear (COLM), Nike (NKE), Under Armour (UAA) and VF Corp. (VFC).

Under Armour sneaker discounts down for each month in Q2, says Jefferies
Jefferies analyst Randal Konik says his firm's July webscrapes illustrate that Under Armour's (UAA) percentage of product on discount is down for each month in Q2 and in July, "suggesting continued momentum" into Q3. Under Armour product is selling out, discounting is down, and inventory is controlled, says the analyst. In his survey work, Nike (NKE) still remains top-of-mind in running, however Adidas (ADDYY) "appears to be exhibiting strength too." In basketball, Nike continues to be the dominant player, with notable traction in Giannis Antetokounmpo's first signature shoe, the Zoom Freak 1, Konik tells investors in a research note. The analyst surveyed 200 footwear retailers, discussing the dynamics of Nike, Adidas, and Under Armour in both basketball and running.

SunTrust analyst Andrew Jeffrey upgraded Square to Buy and raised his price target to $80 from $75, saying he expects the company's 2020 investments in "complex retail and restaurants" to accelerate the growth of its future revenues and EBITDA. The analyst believes that the investments will bolster the company's capabilities with large, inventory-intensive retailers where Square is currently less competitive, adding that its sale of Caviar also marked the first step in its "repositioning". While he still sees 2020 as an "investment year", Jeffrey notes that his expectations of revenue growth at Square beyond next year underpin his upgrade.

Atlantic Equities starts Square with Underweight rating, $55 price target
Atlantic Equities analyst Kunaal Malde initiated coverage of Square (SQ) with an Underweight rating and $55 price target. The shares closed Friday at $61.84. Square's core business is decelerating and the mix shift to consumer payments increases uncertainty, Malde tells investors in a research note. The company's core merchant acquiring yields are too high versus peers that are increasingly competing with combined hardware/software platforms, adds the analyst. Further, he points out that PayPal's (PYPL) Venmo is regaining ground on Square's Cash App. Malde this morning also initiated coverage of FIS (FIS) with an Overweight rating as well as Fiserv (FISV) and Jack Henry (JKHY) with Neutral ratings.

Evercore ISI upgrades Snap to Outperform after move into gaming
As previously reported, Evercore ISI analyst Kevin Rippey upgraded Snap to Outperform from In Line and raised his price target for the shares to $20 from $18. While he has been impressed with the trajectory of Snap's fundamentals through much of 2019, Rippey said he remained on the sidelines on the view that valuation fully captured the upside related to the company's advertising business. However, the company's move into gaming, while in very early stages, has taken him off the sidelines as he believes gaming could provide Snap with about $350M in revenue at attractive EBITDA margins by 2022, Rippey tells investors.

Tesla executive turnover notably high, 'not outlandish,' says Bernstein
Bernstein analyst A.M. His analysis indicates that Tesla's annualized executive turnover level has been 27%, "notably higher" than the cohort average of 15%. With that said, the analyst notes that it is "not outlandish," with Snap at 24% and Lyft at 23%, which is nearly as high.

Evercore ISI 'going all in' on semi equipment, upgrades KLA-Tencor, Lam Research
As previously reported, Evercore ISI analyst C.J. Muse upgraded Lam Research (LRCX) and KLA-Tencor (KLAC), each to Outperform from In Line, citing his view that there are both company and industry specific catalysts that will lead the Semiconductor Equipment stocks higher into year-end. The analyst, who laid out sustained leading edge investments at TSMC (TSM), Samsung (SSNLF) spending in logic and ongoing catch-up by Intel (INTC) as among the key drivers of upside, noted that he now rates all four front-end equipment companies at Outperform as he also has that rating on ASML (ASML) and Applied Materials (AMAT). Also as previously reported, Muse upgraded Western Digital (WDC) to In Line from Underperform and raised his price target for the shares to $50 from $30, stating he sees near-term earnings upside being balanced by long-term structural concerns. He raised his price target on Lam shares to $250 from $195 and increased his KLA-Tencor target to $175 from $140.

Memory summit reinforces Goldman view that NAND pricing set to improve
After attending the Flash Memory Summit on August 6 and 7, Goldman Sachs analyst Mark Delaney said his meetings and talks with industry participants reinforced his view that NAND pricing is already showing signs of improvement and increased his confidence that blended NAND pricing will be up sequentially in the fourth quarter. Meanwhile, he still thinks DRAM pricing is likely to fall in the near-term, but said the rate of Q4 decline could be "somewhat less severe" than he previously expected. Delaney has a Buy rating on Micron (MU), a Neutral rating on Western Digital (WDC) and a Buy rating on Lam Research (LRCX), which he believes is well-positioned to benefit from continued scaling in NAND.
