BofA keeps Underperform rating on Deutsche Bank, says capital still an issue
After Deutsche Bank released its outline of its new plan to improve profitability, BofA Merrill Lynch analyst Andrew Stimpson said the cost ambitions are greater than he expected, but he believes capital will continue to be an issue as the bank decided to not raise equity. Also, preliminary Q2 underlying results missed consensus, noted Stimpson, who keeps an Underperform rating on Deutsche Bank shares with many details of the company's plan still outstanding.

Kraft Heinz earnings call 'raised more questions than answers,' says JPMorgan
JPMorgan analyst Ken Goldman lowered his estimates for Kraft Heinz following the company's first earnings call in six months, stating that "the call raised more questions than answers." While management made it clear, in his view, that a major margin rebase is not part of its plan, restraint on divestitures doesn't help reduce near-term leverage and "Street forecasts are almost surely going to drop," Goldman tells investors in a post-earnings research note. He does not think a downgrade is warranted with the stock trading at a "very low multiple," but neither can he recommend Kraft Heinz shares until there is more clarity on the strategy and opportunities, said Goldman, who keeps a Neutral rating on the stock.

Dropbox posted 'solid' quarter and 'positive' outlook, says Jefferies

Jefferies expects in-line quarter for Dropbox

Dropbox reported 'solid beat-and-raise quarter,' says William Blair
William Blair analyst Jason Ader says Dropbox last night reported a "solid beat-and-raise quarter." Bears, however, will point to weaker than expected average revenue per user expansion and billings growth, as well as a smaller revenue beat than what Dropbox has delivered in prior quarters, Ader tells investors in a research note titled "Confidence-Building Print in Face of Heightened Scrutiny." Amid the recent negativity that has weighed on Dropbox shares, and the changes to product pricing and features, the analyst views the guidance raise to Q3 and 2019 and revenue as a "welcome relief." The positives in Dropbox's business "significantly outweigh the negatives at this juncture," says Ader, who keeps an Outperform rating on the shares.

J.C. Penney looks best positioned to gain share from Sears, says Credit Suisse
Looking at potential near-term same-store sales lift Softlines Retail peers could see from share gains based on proximity to Sears (SHLD) stores amid a possible liquidation, Credit Suisse analyst Michael Binetti says J.C. Penney (JCP) and Burlington Stores (BURL) seem best positioned to gain share in 2019 due to close proximity. And while J.C. Penney looks best positioned to gain share from Sears, the analyst thinks the recent stock run-up is "a short-term bounce." Binetti does not see this as sustainable customer acquisition for J.C. Penney given the increased risk of closing destabilized malls, limited visibility to an improved merchandise strategy, and leverage constraints to growth investing. Overall, the analyst believes that while there may be some near-term share benefit, a Sears liquidation could be a bigger tipping point that will accelerate closures of already weakening U.S. C&D malls.

HSBC cut to Equal Weight on rate and virtual bank pressures at Morgan Stanley
As previously reported, Morgan Stanley analysts led by Anil Agarwal and Magdalena Stoklosa downgraded HSBC to Equal Weight from Overweight and cut the price target on the London-listed shares to 690p from 740p. A recent pickup in HIBOR rates should help Q2 NIMs expand meaningfully for Hong Kong banks and elevated HIBOR levels could also translate into strong NIMs in Q3, unless HIBOR retraces quickly, the team said. However, they assume two Fed rate cuts by end-2020 and think lower NIMs due to lower Fed rates, as well as the launch of virtual banks, will hurt profitability, Agarwal and Stoklosa told investors in a research note on the Hong Kong financial group. The HKMA has licensed eight virtual banks, and these, particularly the ones backed by Chinese technology players, "are likely to compete fiercely," the analysts added.

Apple iPhone replacement cycle continues to extend, says Credit Suisse
After Apple's September Special Event, Credit Suisse analyst Matthew Cabral says the event featured only incremental iPhone enhancements, with triple camera the biggest addition year over year. As a result, the analyst thinks the replacement cycle continues to extend ahead of 5G coming in the second half of 2020. The two biggest surprises for him were the $699 price point for iPhone 11, as Apple reverses the steady upward march of ASPs over the past few years, and very attractive pricing for TV+, a move that suggests Apple may be more focused on seeding the subscriber base for the long-term rather than maximizing near-term profitability on the offering, particularly when factoring in the free year for device purchasers. Cabral expects the stock to remain range-bound near-term as another lackluster iPhone cycle and the ongoing overhang from the U.S./China trade dispute remain on the front burner. He reiterates a Neutral rating and $209 price target on the shares.

Apple TV+ announcement 'most significant' at Special Event, says DA Davidson
DA Davidson analyst Tom Forte keeps his Buy rating and $270 price target on Apple (AAPL) after its Special Event presentation yesterday. The analyst notes that the company's Apple TV+ pricing at $4.99 was the "most significant" of the announcements, even though he expects the competitive pressure on Roku (ROKU) from Apple's free 1-year SVOD service to be small, recommending that investors buy Roku on weakness. Forte also believes that Apple has a high chance of exceeding its "very low expectations" for new iPhone sales because of the possibility of tariffs possibly raising prices on next year's devices.

Netflix head start unlikely dented by Apple TV+, says Credit Suisse
Credit Suisse analyst Douglas Mitchelson notes that his Netflix (NFLX) thesis already presumes increased competition in the future and Apple (AAPL) is noteworthy as it certainly has a "terrific brand and global distribution platform." However, the analyst believes Netflix's 10-year head start, scale, breath of content and customer engagement is unlikely to be dented by an Apple TV+ subscription service with a relatively light content slate and no library content. In fact, Apple TV+ looks more like an HBO (T) or Showtime than a Netflix, Hulu or Amazon Prime (AMZN), he contends, adding that he continues to believe SVOD will not be a zero sum game. Lastly, Mitchelson would expect Apple TV+ would more likely displace a runner-up than the leader.
