Jefferies incrementally positive on Trade Desk, Snap after Ad Week

Coming out of the Ad Week conference, Jefferies analyst Brent Thill continues to favor Facebook (FB) and Alphabet (GOOGL) in digital advertising, but the analyst is also incrementally positive on Trade Desk (TTD) and Snap (SNAP). Trade Desk is a direct beneficiary of the shift to emerging ad formats like connected TV and podcasts, which are "highly engaging and still relatively untapped," Thill tells investors in a research note. And while Instagram Stories remains the best format to reach younger users, Snap and Tik Tok are gaining traction and were among the most widely attended sessions, adds the analyst. In addition, Thill was surprised that Amazon.com (AMZN) did not have much presence at the conference.

Nomura Instinet upgrades Trade Desk to Neutral on expectations 'reset'
Nomura Instinet analyst Mark Kelley last night upgraded Trade Desk to Neutral from Reduce and raised his price target for the shares to $175 from $165. The analyst upgraded the shares after rotating this valuation methodology to his 2021 estimates. While he still has concerns about Trade Desk's core business "quickly approaching industry growth," he believes the stock's 22% decline since mid-June indicates expectations have been "appropriately reset."

Google auction shift positive for ad tech players, says Craig-Hallum
Google's decision to shift auction mechanics from a second-price auction to a first-price auction is driving improvements in pricing for digital publishers, Craig-Hallum analyst Jason Kreyer tells investors in a research note. He points out that a report from Digiday suggests publishers are seeing pricing increase by 9%-50% in the first 10 days after Google's change. This could drive up prices for supply-side platforms like Rubicon Project (RUBI) and Telaria TLRA), allowing them to assume a take-rate off a larger base of advertising spend, contends Kreyer. He believes buyers, over the long-term, will seek solutions that help them optimize their auction bids. This would increase the utilization of services like Rubicon's Estimated Market Rate or The Trade Desk's (TTD) Koa, says the analyst. Kreyer has Buy ratings on Rubicon Project and Telaria and does not rate shares of Trade Desk.

Google move to first-price auctions driving up CPMs for publishers, says Craig-Hallum
Craig-Hallum analyst Jason Kreyer says that Google's (GOOGL) decision to shift auction mechanics from a second-price auction to a first-price auction are driving improvements in pricing for digital publishers. The analyst believes the first iteration of this could drive up prices for SSPs like Rubicon Project (RUBI) and Telaria (TLRA), allowing them to assume a take rate off a larger base of ad spend. In the long-term, Kreyer believes buyers will seek solutions that help them optimize their auction bids, increasing utilization of services like Rubicon's Estimated Market Rate or The Trade Desk's (TTD) Koa.

Susquehanna upgrades Snap to Neutral after positive advertising checks
Susquehanna analyst Shyam Patil upgraded Snap (SNAP) to Neutral from Negative and boosted his price target for the shares to $18 from $12. The stock closed Monday down 24c to $15.76. The analyst's recent advertising channel checks have suggested that Snap's "solid" growth has continued in Q3 with expectations for continued progress in Q4. The checks also show that Facebook's (FB) Instagram Stories "has lowered barriers" for SNAP Stories adoption, Patil tells investors in a research note. The analyst, who also expect Snap's net addition momentum to continue in the second half of 2019, says the stock's valuation is keeping him from getting even more constructive.

Snap upgraded to Buy from Neutral at Guggenheim
Guggenheim analyst Michael Morris upgraded Snap to Buy from Neutral with a price target of $22. The stock closed Monday up 8c to $17.12. The company is well positioned to outperform the Internet and Media space through year end and provide an investor return of nearly 30% over the next 12 months, Morris tells investors in a research note. He believes the combination of "strong" usage trends, "industry-leading" access to 18-34 year-old users, and platform improvements should drive growth in Snap's advertiser demand. Further, the analyst says Snap's long-term revenue potential is the most underappreciated in his coverage universe. This should support a sustained premium valuation multiple, argues Morris.

Facebook dating survey suggests potential risk for Match Group, says Oppenheimer
Oppenheimer analyst Jason Helfstein surveyed 440 singles to gauge early response to Facebook (FB) Dating, and results highlighted that 40% of respondents were aware of the Facebook Dating product within 48 hours of initial launch in the U.S. Conversion of "aware" users was 15%, and the analyst expects awareness to grow significantly, yielding double digit penetration if the conversion ratio holds. Survey results point to a younger than expected user base, putting Facebook Dating in direct competition with Tinder, he contends. While historical download-data of initial Facebook Dating points to minimal Tinder impact, Helfstein notes that survey results make a compelling argument for near-term headwinds to Match Group (MTCH) shares, coupled with adverse short-term effects from a potential spin of. The analyst has a Perform rating on Match Group's shares.

Guggenheim sees no evidence of Facebook Dating hurting Match's Tinder
Facebook (FB) Dating is now live in 20 countries and Guggenheim analyst Jake Fuller, in a research note earlier to investors, said he cannot find an example where Match Group's Tinder "took a hit." Further, the analyst points out that Facebook Dating has been live in Canada since November 2018 and that his firm's data shows Tinder daily active users up 45% and downloads up 51% since the launch. Strong" Tinder downloads yield the potential for upside to consensus estimates when Match reports Q3 results, the analyst writes. Despite the launch of Facebook Dating in the U.S., the analyst says his perspective on Match is improving. Nonetheless, Fuller kept a Neutral rating on shares of Match Group, whose stock is down 10c to $77.86 in morning trading.

Alphabet price target raised to $1,500 from $1,425 at RBC Capital
RBC Capital analyst Mark Mahaney raised his price target on Alphabet to $1,500 and kept his Outperform rating following his deep dive analysis of its Google Maps business, saying the asset remains one of the company's "greatest under/un-monetized 1B+ user 'Net platforms". The analyst believes however that some of Google Maps' product changes indicate a series of "growing monetization opportunities," citing its competitive moat of over 80% navigation app market share, recent updates to Local Campaigns including "new attractive ad formats for Maps", and data collection through Waze that will offer more solutions for advertisers.

Inphi shipments to Google and Amazon 'remain strong,' says JPMorgan
JPMorgan analyst Harlan Sur says his recent research efforts indicate that Inphi's (IPHI) 200G/400G PAM4 shipments to key hyperscale datacenter customers Google (GOOG, GOOGL) and Amazon (AMZN), system manufacturers and module customers "remain strong." The company remains on track to drive "significantly more" than $80M in PAM4 revenues this year, Sur tells investors in a research note. As such, the analyst says his "strong" second half of 2019 and 2020 outlook remain intact for Inphi. The company continues to be the analyst's top small-cap pick with an Overweight rating.

Light demand for Inphi's 400G in second half not a change, says Rosenblatt
Rosenblatt analyst Hans Mosesmann noted that Inphi (IPHI) shares were down as much as 10.8% yesterday, which he attributes to a competitor firm's call that its PAM4 business at Amazon (AMZN) for 400G is in jeopardy. However, he believes both Amazon and Google (GOOGL) drove the 400G supply chains hard for a big second half ramp, and then backed off by June, and he does not see this as a recent change. Though existing 400G PAM4 inventory build-up at Innolight could delay Inphi's 400G demand picking back up until late in the first quarter of 2020, Mosesmann said he believes Inphi is on track to hit its target of $160M in sales for PAM4 solutions in 2020.

Amazon long-term telehealth intentions worth keeping an eye on, says Credit Suisse
Credit Suisse analyst Jailendra Singh notes that CNBC reported Amazon has launched Amazon Care, a virtual medical clinic for its employees. While the analyst does not see immediate threat to the incumbent telemedicine vendors, Amazon's long-term intentions are worth keeping an eye on. If the Amazon Care program is a success, the company is likely to have all willingness to expand its offering to the broader U.S. market, he contends, adding that if the company goes that route, it remains to be seen if Amazon will approach the current incumbent Telemedicine vendors as its competitors or partners.

Teladoc selloff on Amazon concerns a buying opportunity, says Deutsche Bank
The market is viewing Amazon.com's (AMZN) launch of Amazon Care, a virtual healthcare provider for its Seattle-based employees, as a competitive risk for Teladoc Health (TDOC), which is a "stretch," Deutsche Bank analyst George Hill tells investors in a research note. Shares of Teladoc are down 3% to $69.07 in afternoon trading. Amazon's employees continue to have access to Teladoc's services through its partnerships with Aetna and Premera, the company's principal managed care plan vendors, says Hill. Further, the analyst believes a clinic for employees is not the same as a telemed provider. While the Amazon Care model seems like something new, it just represents an example of the on-site medical clinic strategy used by many large employers, argues Hill. The analyst views the pullback today in shares of Teladoc as a buying opportunity saying the expansion of Amazon's local clinic offering does not represent a near or medium term risk to the company's business.

Amazon earbuds a catalyst for Knowles, says Craig-Hallum
Craig-Hallum analyst Anthony Stoss reiterated a Buy rating on Knowles (KN) and raised his price target on shares to $24 from $23 following the Amazon (AMZN) hardware event, where Amazon announced wireless earbuds that use Knowles balanced armature technology. The analyst said these earbuds -- with their $129 pricing that was favorable to competitors Apple (AAPL) and Samsung (SSNLF) -- would be a near-term catalyst, and could also help translate to a bigger year next year, as Stoss expects to see a "cheaper version of their truly wireless earbuds for closer to $50." Stoss added that he still see meaningful upside to his FY2020 estimates if "Amazon's products prove to be a hit."

Piper believes Amazon Sidewalk is based on Semtech's LoRa
Piper Jaffray analyst Harsh Kumar raised his price target for Semtech (SMTC) to $55 from $50 and reiterates an Overweight rating on the shares. Amazon (AMZN) yesterday announced the launch of its Sidewalk network, which the analyst believes is based on Semtech's LoRa. Sidewalk is Amazon's new low-bandwidth network that uses the 900 megahertz spectrum, roughly the same spectrum range as LoRa, Kumar tells investors in a research note. Given Sidewalk's characteristics, the analyst is "quite convinced" that Sidewalk uses LoRa technology. With Sidewalk, LoRa goes "to the next level, with significant proliferation and growth opportunities," contends Kumar. He believes Sidewalk is capable of driving significant LoRa growth over the next several years.
