Wells Fargo price target lowered to $57 from $59 at BMO Capital
BMO Capital analyst James Fotheringham lowered his price target on Wells Fargo (WFC) to $57 and kept his Market Perform rating after its Q3 results. The analyst cites the bank's lower than expected net interest income along with a miss on fees and a higher than anticipated operating costs. Fotheringham contends that before the new Wells Fargo CEO arrives and administers a strategic review, there are better investment opportunities in large cap banks that include Citi (C), Bank of America (BAC), Capital One (COF) and Morgan Stanley (MS).

Barclays adjusts price targets in Cable, Satellite and Telecom Services
Cable sentiment remains positive going into Q3 earnings due to expectations of continued strength in unit and pricing growth, Barclays analyst Kannan Venkateshwar tells investors in a research note. While video trends could be weaker, the narrative around video "has flipped with investors starting to see this as a positive," according to Venkateshwar. The analyst believes these trends are likely to be supportive of shares in the near term, but he cautions against extrapolating them over the longer term. He increased his price target for Underweight-rated Charter Communications (CHTR) to $338 from $259, for Overweight-rated Comcast (CMCSA) to $48 from $45 and for Overweight-rated Altice USA (ATUS) to $33 from $30. Venkateshwar also lowered his price target for T-Mobile (TMUS to $88 from $93 and for Sprint (S) to $6 from $8 due to lower deal probability as a result of the states' lawsuit.

Check Point downgraded to Underperform from Buy at BofA/Merrill
BofA/Merrill analyst Tal Liani issued a double-downgrade of Check Point (CHKP) to Underperform from Buy and lowered his price target on the shares to $116 from $130. The analyst notes that the company's response to market dynamics has been slow for several years relative to competitors like Cisco (CSCO), Palo Alto (PANW) and Fortinet (FTNT), but the reluctance of users to avoid integrating a new platform has diminished while the impact of the "intense competition" has started to become more visible with Check Point's contracting market share. Liani warns that Check Point growth could reemerge with the launch of the new Infinity platform, but the recent increase to investments may pressure the company's margins and possibly require a "downward reset" in his model.

Inphi drops after Northland sees 'large cut' to Amazon 400G rollout plans
Northland analyst Tim Savageaux says datapoints at the European Conference on Optical Communication support his caution on the timing of 400G ramps both inside/outside the data center, driven in part by technical complexity. Datapoints at the show indicate a "large cut" in 400G rollout plans at Amazon.com (AMZN) this year, which poses a "significant risk" to Inphi (IPHI), the analyst tells investors in a research note. Shares of Inphi are well off their lows on the day but remain down 5% to $60.48 in early afternoon trading. Savageaux also believes that consensus views overestimate the possible impact of the Cisco Systems (CSCO)/Acacia Communications (ACIA) merger on Inphi's coherent application-specific integrated circuit unit. He believes Lumentum (LITE) is more likely to benefit with its Acacia -powered CFP2 DCO platform in the near term. Further, the analyst's early update from the European Conference on Optical Communication is positive for NeoPhotonics (NPTN). Positive Huawei demand dynamics is a notable plus for the company, says Savageaux. He has an Underpeform rating on Inphi, and Outperform ratings on both Lumentum and NeoPhotonics.

Cisco downgraded to Neutral from Buy at Goldman Sachs
Goldman Sachs analyst Rod Hall downgraded Cisco Systems to Neutral from Buy with a price target of $48, down from $56. The stock closed Wednesday up 45c to $46.84. Large enterprise spending will continue to weaken and telecom spending activity will remain depressed in the near term, Hall tells investors in a research note. The analyst notes that Goldman's Enterprise Activity Index deteriorated in September, while his latest reseller survey was also incrementally negative on enterprise spending trends. In the telecom segment, Hall is concerned that negative trends could persist "well into" 2020, driven by carrier pauses ahead of 5G and needed carrier network automation implementation. He thinks the market will move Cisco's multiple down to his price target, which he notes is closer to the company's historical price-to-earnings ratio.

Thill is most positive on Alphabet and Facebook. Alphabet's setup is better in the second half of the year relative to the first half due to easier comps, healthy core advertising, momentum in Google Cloud, and expanded hardware line-up ahead of the holidays, the analyst tells investors in a research note. He also likes Facebook's setup due to easier second half comps, recent product innovation on Instagram Commerce, and improvements to the core Facebook app. In e-commerce, Thill is a buyer of Amazon.com (AMZN) on any pullback. Square reported 'notable' deceleration in GPV, says Morgan Stanley
Morgan Stanley analyst James Faucette said the deceleration in gross payment volume, or GPV, growth reported by Square (SQ) this quarter was somewhat disappointing and "notable" given the strong U.S. consumer spending trends reported by other Payments players, including Visa (V) and MasterCard (MA). Combining this with the "deviation from Square's traditional beat-and-raise story" made him less positive about the report, although his calendar 2019 forecasts remain largely intact, said Faucette, who keeps an Equal Weight rating and $74 price target on Square shares.

Morgan Stanley analyst James Faucette raised his price target on MasterCard shares to $315 from $291 following the company's Investment Community Meeting last week. MasterCard is also making notable progress on its longer term initiatives, which should support growth beyond the company's 3-year outlook, added Faucette.

Nvidia's two biggest growth drivers are back, says Piper Jaffray
Piper Jaffray analyst Harsh Kumar believes Nvidia's (NVDA) two biggest growth drivers, namely gaming and data center, are back. Following a round of channel checks, the analyst says Nvidia is one of the best positioned semiconductor companies from a "company-specific catalyst perspective." Gaming, which represents around half of the company's revenue, appears to have settled following the GPU inventory correction, and the segment is setup for a seasonally strong second half of 2019, Kumar tells investors in a research note. In addition, the analyst is convinced Nvidia's data center business appears to have stabilized, and he sees growth in the segment moving forward. Further, Kumar thinks the Mellanox (MLNX) acquisition is on track to close by the end of calendar 2019. Lastly, based on Piper's teen survey results, the analyst believes video game interest remains high among U.S. teens. He keeps an Overweight rating on Nvidia with a $200 price target. KeyBanc makes four Semiconductor rating changes after trip to Asia
KeyBanc analyst Weston Twigg made four rating changes in the Semiconductors space after his quarterly trip to Asia revealed overall demand trends, while still weak, "are not getting worse." The analyst was encouraged to find inventories are beginning to normalize and that expectations are for normal seasonality in Q4. As a result, he upgraded Analog Devices (ADI), Microchip (MCHP), and NXP Semiconductors (NXPI) to Overweight from Sector Weight. Conversely, the China insourcing trends at Huawei and other manufacturers are accelerating faster than Twigg had expected, which results in his downgrade of Xilinx (XLNX) to Sector Weight from Overweight. The analyst also recommends building long-term positions in semi-cap and memory stocks like KLA-Tencor (KLAC), Teradyne (TER), Micron Technology (MU), MKS Instruments (MKSI), Entegris (ENTG), Applied Materials (AMAT) and Lam Research (LRCX). If the deal gets done, Dish is likely to move further down the operating path and potentially attract new partners, says the analyst. BMO Capital analyst Thanos Moschopoulos lowered his price target on Sierra Wireless to $13 and kept his Market Perform rating after its mixed Q4 results and a "large guidance miss" driven by the OEM segment. The analyst also cites the management's anticipated "market share losses in mobile computing and networking, between now and the 5G product cycle". Moschopoulos is positive on the company's focus to leverage its device to cloud capability, but believes that it needs to show "better revenue growth and margin trajectory".

Fly Intel: Top five analyst downgrades
Catch up on today's top five analyst downgrades with this list compiled by The Fly: 1. Yelp (YELP) downgraded to Neutral from Buy at Citi with analyst Mark May saying despite "solid" Q4 results and management's new bullish long-term targets, the company's sales outlook "points to more challenging near-term business conditions than we expected." 2. Dish (DISH) downgraded to Equal Weight from Overweight at Barclays with analyst Kannan Venkateshwar saying while he believes the stock's current price implies "a deep discount relative to its intrinsic value," that "valuation may be moot if Dish is unable to fund its build and vendors are unwilling to work with the company." 3. D.R. Horton (DHI) double downgraded to Market Perform from Strong Buy at Raymond James while PulteGroup (PHM) was downgraded to Market Perform from Outperform. 4. Dunkin' Brands (DNKN) downgraded to Hold from Buy at Argus with analyst John Staszak citing the management's plans to add fewer stores going forward and the company's prospects for low-single digit same-store sales growth. 5. Sierra Wireless (SWIR) downgraded to Neutral from Outperform at First Analysis and to Underperform from Neutral at Macquarie. This list is just a portion of The Fly's full analyst coverage. AT&T price target raised to $40 from $35 at Raymond James
Raymond James analyst Frank Louthan reiterated an Outperform rating on AT&T and raised his price target to $40 from $35. Louthan, who adjusted his Q3 revenue and EBITDA estimates to $44.7B and $15.057B, respectively, from $45.6B and $15.125B as well as his Q3 wireless equipment and WarnerMedia revenue estimates to $4B and $8.2B, respectively, from $4.3B and $8.4B, tells investors in a research note that he expects lower upgrade rates to persist into the back half along with a more competitive film slate relative to what the 2018 box office presented. Additionally, the analyst says he thinks that AT&T can find "several billion" of cash cost to take out, if not more, by improving operational efficiencies. He expects a cost cutting plan to be in place when AT&T issues guidance after reporting Q4 results.

Verizon initiated with a Market Perform on competition at Bernstein
As previously reported, Bernstein analyst Peter Supino initiated coverage of Verizon (VZ) with a Market Perform rating and $63 price target. The analyst notes that Verizon is the mobile industry leader with an "exciting" network vision and upside to its dividend payout ratio. However, he believes the networks of AT&T (T) and T-Mobile (TMUS) are increasingly competitive and he has longer-term concerns about an intensification of MVNO-competition. With strong near-term mix tends, long-term potential for new revenues from 5GHome and Enterprise, the risk-reward seems balanced, he contends.

The analyst is positive on the company's portfolio of "robust collection of IT products" in PCs and Data Center, stating that the management is "driving value" while maximizing the stock's free cash flow, revenue, and earnings growth. Baruah contends that Tech Data has been outgrowing the channel industry demand in recent years and should continue to do so, while having "already absorbed the most significant hit" to its traditional on-premise spending.

Tech Data investors likely to want higher takeout price, says Stifel
Stifel analyst Matthew Sheerin raised his price target for Hold-rated Tech Data (TECD) to $125 from $105 after Reuters reported that Apollo Global Management (APO) has made an offer to acquire the company for about $130 per share, or $4.8B, a 17% premium to last night's closing price. The stock in premarket trading is up 14%, or $15.16, to $126.50. The analyst says that although Tech Data's board is obligated to give serious consideration to any takeout offers, he would not be surprised to see the company consider other, potentially higher offers. Tech Data has shown strong execution in recent quarters, and some investors would argue that the company should deserve a better valuation multiple, Sheerin tells investors in a research note titled "Is 7x EV/EBITDA Good Enough?" The analyst, however, believes an Apollo offer at the reported terms "would be fair."

CIOs see continued pressure on IT budgets in 2020, says Morgan Stanley
Morgan Stanley analysts Katy Huberty, James Faucette and Keith Weiss noted that rising economic uncertainty has been reflected in the firm's past several CIO surveys, with 2019 overall IT budget growth expectations falling for 4 straight quarters. In keeping with that trend, 53% of the CIOs surveyed by the firm expect lower IT budget growth in 2020 and their composite initial read on 2020 IT spending calls for a 100 basis points growth deceleration, the firm's U.S. tech team stated in a note to investors. Among those surveyed, Amazon (AMZN) and Microsoft (MSFT) are seen as having taken over the lead in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning while IBM (IBM) "maintains strong mind share," the analysts said. The team continues to favor companies they see as well positioned for key secular trends with good valuation, such as Microsoft, Adobe (ADBE) and Salesforce (CRM), while they are more cautious on legacy players at risk of losing share as organizations move to the cloud, like Symantec (SYMC) and VMware (VMW).

Oppenheimer lowers price targets for MongoDB, Twilio, New Relic ahead of reports
Oppenheimer analyst Ittai Kidron said he expects solid results from the Analytics, Collaboration, and Infrastructure software group, though upside may be more constrained given several vendors face tougher year-over year comparisons and it seems investors have become more sensitive to high valuations. While he said MongoDB (MDB), Twilio (TWLO), Smartsheet (SMAR) and Elastic (ESTC) remain top picks, he sees lower near-term upside given tough comps in the second half and sees them as better positioned to deliver bigger upside in calendar 2020, Kidron tells investors in his group preview. Ahead of results from the group, Kidron lowered his price target for MongoDB to $155 from $180, for Twilio to $145 from $160 and for New Relic (NEWR) to $80 from $85. He also noted that he is bullish on Alteryx (AYX), Atlassian (TEAM) and VMware (VMW).

Morgan Stanley trims targets for 'high multiple' software stocks amid pullback
Morgan Stanley analyst Keith Weiss, Stan Zlotsky and others in the firm's Software team noted that software stocks have pulled back 23% on average from their 52-week highs, which they attribute to a combination of high growth software multiples being at historical peaks, a volatile macro environment and sector rotations away from momentum names. Though they think the pullback raises the question of whether it is time to start buying software again, the analysts note that high growth multiples are still well above historical averages and the firm's Q3 CIO survey is suggesting a steep deceleration in software spending growth into 2020. Given those facts, as well as difficult second half comps for numerous companies in the space, they see unfavorable risk/rewards for "a lot of the high fliers," the analysts said. The team has lowered their price targets for Liveramp (RAMP) to $58 from $64, for Workiva (WK) to $42 from $46, for PagerDuty (PD) to $34 from $43, for MongoDB (MDB) to $150 from $160, for Yext (YEXT) to $15 from $16 and for VMware (VMW) to $170 from $188.

As previously reported, HSBC analyst Stephen Howard upgraded Vodafone to Buy from Hold, citing his view that the decision to rebase the dividend to 9.0 eurocents per share and the New Zealand disposal point to welcome proactive management of the balance sheet. Revenue trends are set to improve through FY20 and he believes "the tone of the company's commentary should get progressively brighter," Howard tells investors.
