Disney Plus was Google's most searched term in U.S. this year, TechCrunch says

In the United States in 2019, Disney's (DIS) recently released streaming service Disney Plus was the most searched trend of the year according to Google's (GOOG) "Year in Search" data, TechCrunch's Sarah Perez reports. Disney Plus as a search trend was followed by Cameron Boyce, Nipsey Hussle, Hurricane Dorian, Antonio Brown, Luke Perry, "Avengers: Endgame," "Game of Thrones" (T), iPhone 11 (AAPL), and Jussie Smollet, Perez says. HBO's "Game of Thrones" was the most searched TV show trend in the U.S. in 2019, followed by Netflix's (NFLX) "Stranger Things" and "When They See Us," then HBO's "Chernobyl" and Disney Plus' "The Mandalorian," the author notes. Netflix downgraded to Underperform from Hold at Needham
Needham analyst Laura Martin downgraded Netflix (NFLX) to Underperform from Hold without a price target. The streaming has consistently stated it will not have advertising, which will result in U.S. subscriber losses, Martin tells investors in a research note. She projects Netflix will lose 4M U.S. subs in 2020 at its premium priced tier of $9-$16 per month. The company must add a second, lower priced service to compete with Disney+ (DIS), Apple+ (AAPL), Hulu, CBS All Access (VIAC) and NBC's Peacock (CMCSA), each of which have $5-$7 per month choices, contends Martin. The analyst, who believes Netflix's balance sheet "cannot withstand lower revenue," recommends a six-to-minute per hour ad load to supplement a $5-$7 monthly consumer fee. She does not think the company's international subscriber growth can support its valuation and would find the stock more attractive around $260. Netflix closed Monday down $4.85 to $302.50.

Disney price target raised to $170 from $165 at Loop Capital
Loop Capital analyst Alan Gould raised his price target on Disney to $170 and kept his Buy rating after its 10-K disclosure that Hulu generated $2.9B in revenue during the second half of the year while domestic cable subscribers declined at an accelerated rate. The analyst is also modeling a higher forecast of Disney+ subscribers in the first year at 26M, including 6M internationally, after 10M signups were registered on the first day of the service. Gould believes that Disney can generate over $1B in Disney+ revenue in its first year and over $10B in revenue by 2025.

Roku price target raised to $200 from $150 at Needham
Needham analyst Laura Martin raised her price target on Roku to $200 and kept her Buy rating, saying the company's promising aggregation platform economics in 2019 will be followed with accelerated subscription SVOD revenues in 2020. The analyst sees Roku as a "key beneficiary" with an installed base of 32M connected-TV homes in the U.S. as Disney+, Apple+, Peacock, and HBOMax streaming services accelerate customer acquisition spending. Martin adds that the company should be valued as an "internet aggregator" comparable to YouTube in the video space.

Akamai remains a top pick heading into 2020 at Piper Jaffray
Piper Jaffray analyst James Fish keeps an Overweight rating on Akamai Technologies (AKAM) with a $103 price target following a deep dive around the primary questions surrounding the company. New over-the-top services create a $480M total addressable market by 2024, with Disney+ (DIS) representing $140M and Akamai likely getting 30% share, Fish tells investors in a research note. Second, there is $1B in cross-sell available within the Security installed base and a $5B total addressable market of the entire content delivery networks installed base, and Akamai has only 20% total penetration, adds the analyst. In addition, he believes that while management is likely to point to "high-teens" 2020 cloud security growth, it is likely conservative as it implies a significant decline in new business growth. Akamai remains one of the analyst's top picks heading into 2020.

Fly Intel: Top five analyst upgrades
Catch up on today's top five analyst upgrades with this list compiled by The Fly: 1. Alphabet (GOOG, GOOGL) upgraded to Buy at Stifel on forecast for durable growth with analyst Scott Devitt saying earlier this year he had concerns around topline deceleration, when revenue growth fell below 20% in Q1, but trends subsequently re-accelerated. 2. Facebook (FB) upgraded to Buy from Hold at Stifel with analyst John Egbert saying he is incrementally positive on the company's ability to sustain above-market ad revenue growth and maintain healthy levels of user growth and engagement following Facebook's Q3 earnings report. 3. Nike (NKE) upgraded to Conviction Buy from Neutral at Goldman Sachs with analyst Alexandra Walvis saying Nike is on the cusp of a "sharp acceleration" in earnings growth. 4. Brown & Brown (BRO) upgraded to Equal Weight from Underweight at Morgan Stanley with analyst Michael Phillips saying the benefits of a better property and casualty, or P&C, pricing environment accrue directly to brokers, who collect commission on higher prices but don't pay claims. 5. Yeti (YETI) upgraded to Buy from Neutral at Goldman Sachs with analyst Alexandra Walvis saying she increased her estimates to embed upside from the company's new distribution relationship with Lowe's (LOW). F5 Networks downgraded two notches to Underperform from Buy at BofA/Merrill
BofA/Merrill analyst Tal Liani double-downgraded F5 Networks (FFIV) to Underperform from Buy with a price target of $140, down from $185. The analyst warns about pressure on the company's revenue growth amid a "secular shift in demand from appliance-based Application Delivery Controllers to software and cloud-based solutions", which has weighed on pricing and also brought in competition from VMware (VMW), Amazon (AMZN), Google (GOOG) along with content delivery network providers like Akamai (AKAM). Liani's new price target assumes a forward earnings multiple of 13-times, down from 16.5-times in his prior model.

Alphabet upgraded to Buy at Stifel on forecast for durable growth
As previously reported, Stifel analyst Scott Devitt upgraded Alphabet (GOOGL, GOOG) to Buy from Hold with a price target of $1,525, up from $1,325. Earlier this year he had concerns around topline deceleration, when revenue growth fell below 20% in Q1, but trends subsequently re-accelerated, Devitt noted. He is also encouraged by Google's continued share gains of advertising dollars and sees a runway for healthy revenue growth, leading him to raise his long-term Properties revenue estimates. Devitt additionally said he views the streamlining of the management structure - with Sundar Pichai now the CEO of both Google and Alphabet - as a positive for investors. Though it is too early to determine what changes, if any, Pichai will bring to the Other Bets portfolio, the analyst thinks Pichai will keep investors in mind when considering the long-term portfolio objectives.

Alphabet shares attractively valued amid changing of guard, says Argus
Argus analyst Joseph Bonner keeps his Buy rating, $1,450 price target, and his FY19/FY20 EPS views of $60.74 and $63.64 on Alphabet (GOOGL) after the company disclosed that founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin have resigned from their respective posts. The analyst notes that while "regulatory storms" gather around the company amid Congressional and DoJ antitrust reviews, he still sees the stock as attractively valued based on its "rapidly expanding" business lines. Bonner also refutes the latest bear case that Amazon's (AMZN) entry into online advertising will be a "Google killer".

Jefferies small business survey points to 'more love' for internet leaders
Jefferies analyst Brent Thill said his survey of 600+ small-to-mid-size businesses indicated that 64% of respondents advertise on Facebook (FB), 50% on Google (GOOGL) and 43% on Instagram. However, usage of advertising on Amazon (AMZN) and Twitter (TWTR) improved in this year's survey compared to last year, noted Thill. When asked where they planned to allocate more ad dollars, 46% and 45% of SMBs pointed to plans to spend more on Facebook and Google, which Thill characterized as "more love for the leaders." Smaller ad businesses, such as Pinterest (PINS) and Snap (SNAP), were not as popular with SMBs, though this highlights a potential opportunity, added the analyst. The survey also showed that Intuit (INTU) leads the SMB market for accounting software, while the most popular web site builders are GoDaddy (GDDY) and Wix (WIX), but Thill believes all three remain underpenetrated. He continues to identify Facebook, Alphabet, Amazon, Wix, Intuit and GoDaddy as top internet picks.

Apple to launch four 5G models in 2020, says Nomura Instinet
Nomura Instinet analyst Jeffrey Kvaal interprets November's China MIIT smartphone data from his colleague Manabu Akizuki as a positive for Apple. Annual revenues in Greater China look set to return to growth, Kvaal tells investors in a research note. The analyst now expects Apple to launch four 5G models in 2020, including a smaller variant. Apple is "sensibly seeking" to balance operators' 5G interest with its materially higher bill of materials, says Kvaal. He has "restrained optimism" for 5G sales in 2020 and keeps a Neutral rating on Apple with a $225 price target.

BofA says Apple could contribute over $4B in revenue to Qualcomm by FY22
BofA Merrill Lynch analyst Tal Liani noted recent press reports suggest that one to three of Apple's (AAPL) 2020 iPhone models may contain 5G modems, prompting him to run through some scenarios to quantify the associated 5G modem opportunity for Qualcomm (QCOM). In less bullish scenarios, he assumes that Apple's acquired modem technology catches up to Qualcomm's technology in 2022, and Qualcomm's 5G modem share at Apple subsequently drops to 50%. In his more bullish scenario, he assumes Qualcomm maintains its 100% 5G modem share at Apple in 2022. Given those variables, as well as variables around how many iPhone models contain 5G modems, Liani estimated Apple could contribute between $1.2B-$3.4B in QCT revenues in FY21 and $1.6B-$4.4B in FY22 to Qualcomm. Liani reiterates a Buy rating and $100 price target on Qualcomm shares.

Before the open, Evercore ISI analyst Amit Daryanani raised his price target for Apple to $305 from $275 and maintained an Outperform rating, saying he expects Apple to return to growth in FY20. For FY20, the analyst says he sees revenue growth coming in around 6% as strength in Wearables and Services should offset flat to declining revenue in other product lines. He added that he sees signs of strong demand for new products which should enable Apple to report December quarter results at the high-end or above its conservative guidance.

Ciena downgraded to Sell from Neutral at UBS
UBS analyst Tejas Venkatesh downgraded Ciena (CIEN) to Sell from Neutral with a price target of $31, down from $43. Operational expectations are too high following the company's two years of solid top-line outperformance, Venkatesh tells investors in a research note. Based on channel checks, the analyst believes Ciena's revenue guidance for the January quarter will miss consensus. Venkatesh is concerned about slowing Facebook (FB) spending, which was 13% of the company's revenue last quarter based industry checks, as well as spending deceleration at large tier 1 telcos such as AT&T (T).

AT&T near-term short case 'makes little sense,' says JPMorgan
JPMorgan analyst Philip Cusick, after meeting with AT&T CFO John Stephens and going through an extensive review of the factors underlying its guidance in 2020 and beyond, says the stock's near-term short case "makes little sense." To investors who worry about AT&T hitting its guidance, the analyst emphasizes that he doesn't model anything like the revenue, EBITDA, or earnings guidance either. However, he highlights AT&T's 5.5% dividend and $7B-$9B buyback in refuting the short case. Cusick keeps an Overweight rating on AT&T with a $42 price target.

Piper analysis shows Q4 subscriber upside for Netflix
Piper Jaffray analyst Michael Olson says the combination of his preliminary "Netflix Navigator" search index and YouTube trailer analysis point to Q4 subscriber addition upside for both domestic and international. Specifically, the preliminary search index analysis suggests Q4 domestic subscriber growth of 6.0% year-over-year, above the consensus estimate of 4.8%, and international growth of 30.9%, above the consensus of 29.9%. Further, through the first two months of the quarter, the number of U.S. YouTube trailer views for "major" Netflix originals is up 3% year-over-year compared to Q4 of last year, which signals a more engaging content slate, contends Olson. The analyst expects Netflix will continue to capture a "significant portion" of traditional content dollars as they migrate to streaming "despite an onslaught of new streaming services." Olson keeps an Overweight rating on Netflix with a $400 price target.

JPMorgan says Irishman views likely below expected, but Netflix slate 'strong'
JPMorgan analyst Doug Anmuth noted that Netflix announced during an investor conference presentation that 26.4M accounts watched "The Irishman" over its first seven days, which he thinks is likely below expectations but also impacted by the film's 3.5 hour viewing time. He expects viewership to build over the quarter, noting that Netflix said it expects about 40M viewers of the film over the first 28 days of release. Netflix released Marriage Story on Dec. 6, which has generated strong buzz and is also an awards contender, and its late-December content slate is "strong," added Anmuth. The analyst, who believes Netflix's fourth quarter subscriptions have "historically been very back-end weighted," has an Overweight rating on the stock.

Netflix (NFLX) downgraded to Underperform from Hold at Needham with analyst Laura Martin saying the streaming has consistently stated it will not have advertising, which will result in U.S. subscriber losses. 2. JPMorgan (JPM) downgraded to Market Perform from Outperform at Keefe Bruyette with analyst Brian Kleinhanzl saying JPMorgan has been a strong performer in 2019 and remains best in class in terms of quality, but investors should own stocks where consensus earnings estimates have the potential to rise. 3. McCormick (MKC) downgraded to Sell from Neutral at Goldman Sachs with analyst Adam Samuelson saying with the shares having substantially outperformed peers over the past two years, rallying 63% versus the peer group at 5%, and valuation at or near all-time highs on both an absolute and relative basis, McCormick's risk/reward "appears uncompelling absent a notable acceleration in underlying revenue growth which appears unlikely." 4. CSX (CSX) downgraded to Neutral from Buy at Citi with analyst Christian Wetherbee saying CSX has been a "great turnaround and earnings growth story" over the last three years, but as headwinds build in 2020, there is "real risk" to year-over-year earnings growth. 5. Ventas (VTR) downgraded to Underperform from Market Perform at Wells Fargo with analyst Todd Stender saying he appreciates the REIT's diversification across medical office, life science, and hospitals, but he expects its senior housing exposure which accounted for 57% of revenue in the most recent quarter to determine share performance.
