Tesla has voluntarily…

Tesla has voluntarily dropped its lawsuit against Alameda County "without prejudice," though the car maker did not provide any reasoning for why it was doing so, The Verge's Andrew J. Hawkins reports, citing documents filed in a California court. The company had sued the county on May 9, amid CEO Elon Musk's verbal skirmish with county officials over the closing of his company's manufacturing plant in Fremont, California, Hawkins notes. Panasonic (PCRFY) will…

Panasonic (PCRFY) will resume production at Tesla's (TSLA) Buffalo, New York solar panel plant this week after some businesses in the western region of the state have been given approval to reopen, The Verge's Sean O'Kane reports. The facility has been idle for about two months, O'Kane says. "I decided to reopen the factory from Wednesday, 5/20," Mark Shima, the president of Panasonic's North American solar energy division, told employees in an email obtained by The Verge. Shima said that the first two days will be spent performing equipment checks and "standard manufacturing"' will begin on May 22, O'Kane notes. Reference Link

JMP Securities analyst…

JMP Securities analyst Joseph Osha lowered the firm's price target on Tesla to $1,001 from $1,020 but keeps an Outperform rating on the shares. The analyst says the new price target reflects his assumption that the company's Fremont production capacity may continue on a partial basis for longer, with no return to pre-COVID output seen this year. Osha still models 2021 deliveries by Tesla at 445K for Model 3 and 207K for Model Y - both above consensus - noting that it is hard to see how Tesla cannot manage to grow 26% per year from its 2019 rate.

In April, registrations…

In April, registrations of new passenger cars in the European Union posted a year-on-year decline of 76.3%, the European Automobile Manufacturers Association reported. "The first full month with COVID-19 restrictions in place resulted in the strongest monthly drop in car demand since records began. With most showrooms across the EU closed for the entire month, the number of new cars sold fell from 1,143,046 units in April 2019 to 270,682 units last month," the ACEA stated. Each of the 27 EU markets recorded double-digit declines in April, but Italy and Spain endured the biggest losses, with car registrations falling by 97.6% and 96.5% respectively, the group added. Publicly traded automakers include Daimler AG (DDAIF), Fiat Chrysler (FCAU), Ford (F), General Motors (GM), Honda (HMC), Nissan (NSANY), Tesla (TSLA), Toyota (TM) and Volkswagen (VWAGY).

Panasonic (PCRFY) and…

Panasonic (PCRFY) and Tesla (TSLA) are in talks to expand battery production at their Nevada factory after seeing a surge in demand, Reuters' Makiko Yamazaki reports. The two companies' partnership has been strained in recent years, with Panasonic losing its status as Tesla's exclusive battery supplier earlier this year. "We are seeing strong demand from Tesla" beyond the Nevada plant's current capacity of 35 gigawatt hours per year, Panasonic CFO Hirokazu Umeda told an earnings briefing on Monday. "We are in discussions right now" about expanding the plant's capacity, he said. Reference Link

Restarting production at…

Restarting production at Tesla's California factory last week sets up the electric car maker's next drama of potential S&P 500 inclusions, says Tim Higgins of the Wall Street Journal. "Inclusion in the S&P 500 requires an accumulated profit over four consecutive quarters. With Tesla's profit over its past three quarters-its longest run of profitability-it may be able to join the influential index if it can defy Wall Street's expectation and eke out another this period," added the WSJ story. Morgan Stanley analyst…

Morgan Stanley analyst Adam Jonas said he has noticed "an increasingly ebullient level of sentiment" among Tesla investors with shares making a run towards its previous all-time highs, leading to many questions about why he is not more positive on the stock. In defense of why he is not currently recommending Tesla shares at an $800 share price, Jonas highlighted seven reasons that are a few of the main ones: the company's capital intensity; the U.S.-China risk; short-term demand risk; competition from Amazon (AMZN) and others in tech as well as from Chinese state-supported carmakers; potential union risk; what he sees as better ways to invest in tech; and what he sees as better ways to invest in the theme of electric vehicles and batteries. As part of his defense of his Equal Weight rating and $680 price target on Tesla, Jonas argued that investors "should consider the multitude of risks facing the company including but not limited to US/China relations, additional factory shutdowns, and global auto demand."

Catch up on the…

Catch up on the weekend's top five stories with this list compiled by The Fly: 1. Disney (DIS) will partially reopen its Disney Springs entertainment and shopping complex at Walt Disney World Resort in Florida on May 20, according to Reuters. Disney and unions representing workers at Florida's Walt Disney World reached an agreement on safeguards to protect employees from the coronavirus, removing one of the company's hurdles to reopening its popular theme parks, the publication noted. 2. Tesla (TSLA) told employees that a California county health official has now signed off on safety measures the company took last week at its car plant as it restarted production in defiance of the area's shutdown order, Bloomberg's Josh Eidelson reported. The Alameda County health officer's approval means Tesla has local support to resume full production starting this week, Laurie Shelby, the company's environmental, health, and safety vice president, wrote in an email to staff that was viewed by Bloomberg News. 3. Over the coming year, news of steps toward a COVID-19 vaccine will move markets, perhaps even more than its rational, but for now, it is too early for investors to pick winners and losers among the programs, Josh Nathan-Kazis wrote in this week's edition of Barron's. Nonetheless, a vaccine race does offer an opportunity for investors to make a call on the future of the global vaccine business, the author contended, noting that for an established company like Pfizer (PFE), which has spent the past few years rebuilding its research and development operation, it would be the strongest possible proof that its strategy is working. For Moderna (MRNA), it would help validate the company's long list of experimental products, all of which rely on the same relatively unproven technology as its COVID-19 vaccine, the publication pointed out. There are, however, serious risks, with shares of smaller biotechs like Moderna, Novavax (NVAX), and Inovio Pharmaceuticals (INO) surging on enthusiasm for their COVID-19 vaccine programs, despite the companies having no marketed products. Those stocks face steep drops if their COVID-19 vaccines fall through, Nathan-Kazis added. 4. Amazon (AMZN) said it plans to begin reopening its warehouses in France next week, after resolving a dispute over working conditions with workers' unions, The Wall Street Journal's Sam Schechner reported. The deal, under which Amazon's six French warehouses will reopen progressively beginning on May 19, brings a close to a dispute that has slowed Amazon's business and fueled disputes in France, the U.S. and elsewhere over whether it is doing enough to protect the safety of workers during the coronavirus pandemic, the author added. 5. Nokia (NOK), Ericsson (ERIC), Samsung (SSNLF), ZTE (ZTCOY), Cisco (CSCO), Juniper Networks (JNPR), Ciena (CIEN), Corning (GLW), American Tower (AMT), Crown Castle (CCI), SBA Communications (SBAC) ViacomCBS (VIAC), Verizon (VZ), Procter & Gamble (PG), Johnson & Johnson (JNJ), Comcast (CMCSA), Merck (MRK), McDonald's (MCD), PepsiCo (PEP), and Medtronic (MDT) saw positive mentions in this week's edition of Barron's, while Wayfair (W) was mentioned cautiously.
