In recent weeks, Facebook…

In recent weeks, Facebook investigated suspicious content supporting the Presidential campaign for Bernie Sanders, though the company was not able to substantiate allegations that Trump supporters or Russian actors were involved in any inauthentic activity, the Wall Street Journal's Emily Glazer and Dustin Volz report, citing people familiar with the matter. Some in the company's leadership were briefed recently on the probe, though it could not be learned whether the investigation is ongoing, the authors note. Facebook spokesman Andy Stone said that the social media giant looked into a claim by an outside researcher over suspicious pro-Sanders content, among regular reports it generally receives from the research community, the authors say. "We investigate each credible claim we receive, just as we did in this instance when an outside researcher contacted us," Stone said. "To date, we have not been able to substantiate the researcher's claims and we have not been notified by the intelligence community." Reference Link

France's Finance minister said that failure to reach a global deal on where and how much to tax digital giants such as Google (GOOGL), Amazon (AMZN) or Facebook (FB) would result in many digital tax regimes emerging all over the world, Reuters' Jan Strupczewski writes. Reference Link

The Department of Justice…

The Department of Justice has contacted at least one outside law firm to work on its antitrust probe of the large U.S. technology companies, Bloomberg reports. The search could signal preparation of a lawsuit, says Bloomberg, who notes that Google (GOOG, GOOGL) and Facebook (FB) are under an antitrust inquiry.

Facebook (FB) is offering…

Facebook (FB) is offering to pay its users for personal data, including voice recordings, in a rare example of tech companies directly compensating users for collecting their information, the Financial Times' Tim Bradshaw reports. The recordings, which are made through Facebook's new market research app Viewpoints, will help to train the speech recognition system that powers the social media giant's Portal devices, which rival Amazon's (AMZN) Echo devices and Alexa, Bradshaw notes. Other companies that make smart speakers include Apple (AAPL) and Google (GOOGL). Reference Link

Shopify (SHOP) stated in…

Shopify (SHOP) stated in an announcement posted on its corporate site: "As online commerce becomes increasingly borderless, it's easy to forget that payments and the value exchange of goods are not a solved problem everywhere. Much of the world's financial infrastructure was not built to handle the scale and needs of internet commerce. Our mission is to make commerce better for everyone and to do that, we spend a lot of our time thinking about how to make commerce better in parts of the world where money and banking could be far better. That's why we decided to become a member of the Libra Association. This is one step, but not the only step we'll be taking to be a part of the solution to this global problem. As a member of the Libra Association, we will work collectively to build a payment network that makes money easier to access and supports merchants and consumers everywhere." The Libra Association was started by Facebook (FB), which has said the Association is independent and not controlled by the company. Reference Link

Sony (SNE) and Facebook…

Sony (SNE) and Facebook (FB) will not be participating in this year's Game Developers Conference amid concerns around the outbreak of coronavirus, Gamesindustry.biz's Christopher Dring reports. Facebook said it still intends to make announcements at GDC around its Oculus business, but will now do so via digital formats, Dring says. "Out of concern for the health and safety of our employees, our dev partners, and the GDC community, Facebook will not be attending this year's Game Developer Conference due to the evolving public health risks related to COVID-19," a Facebook company spokesperson said. "We still plan to share the exciting announcements we had planned for the show through videos, online Q&As, and more, and will plan to host GDC partner meetings remotely in the coming weeks. Sony Interactive, which also canceled its appearance at PAX East, told Gamesindustry.biz, "We have made the difficult decision to cancel our participation in Game Developers Conference due to increasing concerns related to COVID-19 (also known as coronavirus). We felt this was the best option as the situation related to the virus and global travel restrictions are changing daily. We are disappointed to cancel our participation, but the health and safety of our global workforce is our highest concern. We look forward to participating in GDC in the future." Reference Link

Ben Collins of NBC News wrote earlier that Twitter is testing a new way to label potential misinformation. Citing a "leaked memo" of the new features, , the new format will add "brightly colored labels directly beneath lies and misinformation posted by politicians and public figures," NBC News added. "Twitter confirmed that the leaked demo, which was accessible on a publicly available site, is one possible iteration of a new policy to target misinformation it plans to roll out March 5," said the NBC News story. The Financial Times' Hannah Murphy wrote earlier that social media giant Facebook is facing claims from the Internal Revenue Service that it is "deliberately 'downplaying' the value of its assets as part of a scheme to pay less US tax." The proceedings, which have a potential cost of more than $9B for Facebook, are focused on how the social media giant "valued intellectual property such as software and trademarks transferred to an Irish subsidiary in 2010," added the Financial Times.
